Purpose
General Collection Guidelines
Collecting Codes
 
PURPOSE

To support teaching and research through the master's level in biological principles and specialty tracks including botany, zoology, microbiology, physiology, biomedical science, ecology, marine biology, and systematic biology; to support the program through the master's level in the biotechnology concentration; to support the PhD in Ecological Sciences; to help to support the PhD in Biomedical Sciences offered jointly by the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Psychology, and Physics at ODU and with Eastern Virginia Medical School. While the concern for the above areas is centered in the Biological Sciences Department, faculty in the Center for Biotechnology and the Applied Marine Research Laboratory as well as faculty and students in other fields, (e.g., oceanography, chemistry, health sciences, geology, engineering, and physics) also have interest in one or more of these areas.
 

GENERAL COLLECTION GUIDELINES

Languages:  English is the primary language of the collection, but other languages may be acquired by faculty request.  Translations into English are preferred over the original if they are available.

Chronological Guidelines: Emphasis is on current scholarship except with respect to purely descriptive works of flora and fauna, concerning which the chronological guidelines are not applicable.

Geographical Guidelines: No region is excluded, but there is some emphasis on biota in eastern North America, the north Atlantic Ocean, the estuaries of eastern North America, especially the Chesapeake Bay, and in fresh waters.

Treatment of Subject: Professional books are acquired on a broad basis. Graduate textbooks are acquired selectively. There is cooperation between the Old Dominion University Library and the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Library in the collection of medical books and medical journals so that those dealing with the basic biological sciences are acquired by ODU, and those dealing with clinical medicine are acquired by EVMS. The following are not purchased: teaching of biology on the pre-college level, popular biographies of biologists, material on clinical aspects of biology, and natural history books (often with ample photographs) written for the non-scientist.

Types of Material: Included are monographs, treatises, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, directories, abstracts, handbooks, proceedings, thesauri, and handbooks, government publications, and serials. Dissertations from other institutions are acquired selectively. Material may be acquired in electronic format, such as CD-ROM or Internet access, if appropriate.

Date of Publication: The emphasis is on current publications, but older material is acquired as needed.

Zoology:  
Includes animal behavior (also of interest to psychologists), parasitology, including vector biology, developmental biology, animal taxonomy, animal physiology, animal genetics, and biology of aging. See the section on Biomedical Sciences for medical applications and for cell and molecular biology.  
Exception--Applied physiology  
Includes care of laboratory animals, care of domestic animals, veterinary science, and fish farming. 		 3a

Includes immunology, virology, microbial genetics, and host-parasite microbiology.

Ecological Sciences: 
Vertebrate biology (including ichthyology, herpetology, ornithology and mammology), wildlife ecology; 
Invertebrate biology (including entomology, acarology, marine benthic organisms, marine zooplankton; 
Plant ecology (including nutrient cycling in ecosystems, production, modelling), freshwater and wetlands ecology; 
Marine ecology (including pollution ecology, monitoring existing environment, and bioassay).		 3b
Biomedical Sciences:  
Includes medical microbiology, immunology, virology, host-parasite relationship, human physiology, medical neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, endocrinology, human genetics, mammalian reproductive biology, histology, and tumor biology.
