The Civil and Environmental Engineering program offers degrees on the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels and includes graduate and faculty research programs. It prepares students both for professional practice in engineering and for research and teaching careers in the field. The university's program emphasizes the following components of civil engineering: environmental engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, coastal engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Classes offered, student enrollment, primary faculty research interests, and the library collection follow this emphasis.
Language: English (or translation into English) is the language of the collection. Because of limited funds, no other languages will be currently collected except through gifts. Current technical translating dictionaries will be selected for the reference collection in German, French, Spanish, Russian, and Japanese and other languages as funds are available but will not receive top priority in allocation of funds.
Chronological Guidelines: For most parts of the curriculum, collection emphasis is on currently published materials on current research and development. There will be selective retrospective purchasing in specific areas such as water systems.
Geographical Guidelines: Current selection will continue
to emphasize U.S. based materials. Exceptions will be made in cases where
the curriculum or current research clearly requires materials on techniques
in particular countries or areas of the world or on specific non-U.S. theories
or methods.
Treatment of Subject: Areas of emphasis follow the curriculum
emphases: environmental and water resources engineering; structural engineering;
coastal engineering; and geotechnical engineering.
Types of Materials: All scholarly materials should be collected, including monographs, journals (both scholarly and professional), proceedings, electronic indexing and full text resources, and research reports. Through the approval plan, some undergraduate and introductory texts will be purchased to supplement curriculum instruction.
Date of Publication: Emphasis will be largely on currently
published materials.
