The goal of collection development in this field is to represent
all areas of curriculum and research with professional and scholarly materials.
The collection has concentrated on general and career counseling/ development
materials. Newer general areas of interest in this subject are multicultural
counseling and diversity training and adult/lifespan development. The counseling
program offers both an undergraduate major in human services counseling
and a masters program in guidance and counseling. The curriculum includes
human growth and development; counseling theory and skills; group counseling;
career counseling; multicultural counseling; college student development/student
personnel; test analysis and interpretation; and the organizational principles
of guidance, counseling, and student personnel. The graduate program offers
both a masters degree and Certificate of Advanced Study, both of which
fulfill the requirements for licensure in Virginia as a school counselor
and/or licensed professional counselor. The counseling program is part
of the department of Educational Leadership and Counseling.
Language: Works in English are primarily collected. Works by theorists writing in other languages are collected in translation.
Chronological Guidelines: The emphasis of the collection is on current theory and practice.
Geographical Guidelines: The emphasis of the collection is on American practice, with works on emerging areas in international practice collected selectively.
Treatment of Subject: Scholarly and professional works in the field form the basis of the collection and are emphasized in collecting. Textbooks are acquired selectively. Popular works and works intended for self-guidance are only occasionally acquired or added as gifts. Theses and dissertations are generally not collected. Biographies and histories are added selectively.
Types of Materials: It is the aim of the collection to include major monographs, bibliographies, and collected works including conference proceedings in the field. Serials published by national societies/institutions are collected. There is a need to collect audiovisual resources, both for on-campus and distance education classes, and there are electronic resources emerging, such as test reference material, which are being added to the collection as funds permit.
Date of Publication: Generally, works published within the last twenty years are collected. However, basic works in counseling and psychology from the nineteenth century on are collected as original editions or as reprints.
