The purpose of collection development for the department of Early Childhood, Special Education, Speech-Language Pathology is to represent the curriculum with professional and scholarly materials in the areas of early childhood education, special education, speech-language pathology. ESSE offers one undergraduate program in speech-language pathology and audiology, which serves as a feeder program for the master’s degree program. ESSE offers three graduate programs and a cognate in early childhood education for students in the urban education concentration of the Urban Services Ph.D. program. The master’s program in early childhood education emphasizes the teaching of children from infancy to third grade. It also includes parenting and the interaction of the young child with the family. The master’s program in speech-language pathology concentrates on designing and implementing intervention programs with children and adults who display a wide variety of speech, language, and hearing disorders. This program is accredited by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association. The master’s program in special education prepares teachers and other personnel to design and implement programs for individuals with disabilities in a variety of settings. The special education master’s program can be set up to satisfy the state’s teacher certification in emotional/behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, mental retardation, early childhood special education, and severe disabilities.
In addition to the academic programs, the department operates an Integrated
Preschool Program (3-5 year-olds) and two Multi-Age Integrated Classrooms
(Grades 1-2 and Grades 3-4). These classroom programs are training sites
for ECE and Special Education teachers.
Language: Works in English are primarily collected. Works by theorists writing in other languages are collected in translation.
Chronological Guidelines: Current practice is emphasized in this collection, with historical theory and practice in the United States and Great Britain also included.
Treatment of Subject: Scholarly and professional works in the three fields are emphasized in collecting. Textbooks are only rarely collected. Popular works are occasionally added in the areas of parenting and child development. Theses and dissertations are generally not collected.
Types of Materials: Monographs, bibliographies, collected works, conference proceedings are among the types of materials collected. Serials are heavily emphasized, especially those published by national societies or associations.
There is a need to add more periodical titles, especially in special education.
Date of Publication: Works published within the last ten years are emphasized. Historical materials of significance are added periodically.
