|
Library and information science materials are purchased to support instruction, study, and research for the Master of Science in Education degree with majors in either elementary or secondary education. Among the areas of emphasis is the library science/middle education concentration. This degree is offered by the Educational Curriculum and Instruction Department and leads to certification as a school librarian. In addition, the collection supports the research and study needs of librarians practicing at Old Dominion University. Also, the collection supports instructional and research programs of Catholic University of America's (Washington, D.C.) School of Library and Information Science which grants the Master of Science in Library Science degree.
Language:
English is the primary language
of the collection. Materials in other languages are collected on a very
highly selective basis.
Chronological guidelines:
There are no chronological limits
to the collection. Materials covering both contemporary and historical
topics are acquired.
Geographical guidelines:
The United States is given priority.
However, materials emphasizing Canada, Great Britain and other countries
may be acquired selectively.
Treatment of subject:
Research, instruction, and literature
for the practitioner are the primary focus.
Date of publication:
Emphasis is on the purchase of current
materials, especially those published within the last four years.
However, older materials may be acquired to remedy weaknesses in the collection.
Types of material:
The collection will consist of scholarly
serials, scholarly monographs, publications of professional associations,
encyclopedias, bibliographies, videos, handbooks, research reports, proceedings,
symposia, microforms, and electronic publications. The Internet contains
many useful websites plus each speciality in library science has a listserv.
Dissertations may be acquired on a selective basis.
