Collection Policies

The College of Business and Public Administration is accredited at the graduate and undergraduate levels by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business. The College of Business and Public Administration offers several degree tracks encompassing the area of management. At the undergraduate level, coursework is offered which permit students to obtain a minor in Management or a major in Management leading to a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. At the graduate level, the College offers a Master of Business Administration designed to "present broad but thorough insights into the basic problems of management... ." A Master of Public Administration and Master of Urban Studies are also offered and provide the student the opportunity to concentrate in the area management. The College of Business and Public Administration offers two doctoral programs. The first, Urban Services, permits the student to follow a "management concentration ... designed for individuals who are, or intend to become, leaders in urban settings." The doctoral program in Business Administration is a "scholarly, research-based program with a professional orientation. The objective of the program is to prepare individuals of superior promise and potential for careers in higher education as faculty members engaged in teaching and research and for high level administrative and research careers in the public and private sectors."

It is the University Library's goal to develop a collection which supports in full the needs of the degree seeking undergraduate as well as the basic research needs of those students seeking graduate degrees in the College of Business and Public Administration. Additionally, the University Library seeks to provide materials to sustain the teaching and special research interest of the faculty and those courses which are offered on a selected basis through the distance education program. Another aim is to utilize diminishing monetary resources as wisely as possible in order to provide as useful a collection as possible. This policy covers both general collection and reference materials.
 

Languages: - English will be the primary language of the collection. Translations into English from other languages will be selected if they are seminal works or are of major importance to the profession.

Chronological Guidelines:   Current research should be emphasized although classic texts are selectively collected. Gaps in management journal subscriptions should be filled.

Geographical Guidelines:   In keeping with the global approach of the University and its teachings, materials in both domestic and international coverage will be collected.

Treatment of subject:  A solid collection of general materials to support the undergraduate and MBA curriculum will be developed and maintained. Emphasis will also be placed on areas of the collection which support the research needs of the faculty and the doctoral program.

Types of Materials: - Primary emphasis should be placed on selecting scholarly monographs, research publications, conference proceedings and journals. Evaluation of additional periodical titles should take place on a routine basis. Formats should include both print, electronic resources, and audiovisual materials.

• Internet resources:  While information contained on the Internet is vast, there are many sites which link one to resources specifically related to the area of management. For example, the Academy of Management  provides links to listservs and resources such as electronic journals related to the Academy. The Nijenrode Business Webserver  attempts "to focus as much as possible on resources relevant to students, faculty and researchers at business schools." The WWW Business Resources provides links to information such as the Institute of Management and Administration and the Management Archive.

• Other Resources:  Resources such as publications produced by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development should also be considered as enhancements to the collection.

• The Center for Research Libraries: The Center for Research Libraries, "a cooperative membership-based research library" ... complements the University Library collection particularly in the area of foreign materials and newspapers.
