Purpose
General Collection Guidelines
Collecting Codes
 
PURPOSE

To support teaching and research through master's level in psychology and to support the more specialized tracts in industrial/organizational psychology and clinical psychology which may be pursued through the doctoral level, the latter of which is offered through the Virginia Consortium for Professional Psychology (VCPP). Faculty and students in other fields (e.g. education, business, philosophy, sociology, history, political science, and the health sciences) also have some interest in some of these areas.

GENERAL COLLECTION GUIDELINES

Languages: English is the primary language of the collection, but other languages may be acquired by faculty request. Translations into English are preferred over the original if they are available.

Chronological Guidelines: Emphasis is on current scholarship except for works that are recognized as classics in the field, e.g. the works of Freud, Jung, etc. Other older works may be selectively added.

Geographical Guidelines: Emphasis will be mostly on works of Western origin. Works from other areas will be selectively acquired as deemed necessary.

Treatment of Subject: Professional books are acquired on a broad basis. Graduate textbooks are acquired selectively. The following are not purchased: basic undergraduate textbooks, popular works on pop psychology, popular biographies of famous psychologists, books concerned with the mind written for the non-scientist.

Types of Material: Included are monographs, treatises, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, directories, abstracts, handbooks, proceedings, thesauri, handbooks, technical reports, government documents, and serials. Dissertations from other institutions are acquired selectively. Material may be acquired in electronic format, such as CD-ROM or Internet access, if appropriate.

Date of Publication: The emphasis is on current publications, but older material is acquired as needed.

   Center for Research Libraries: The University Library maintains a Center for Research Libraries membership which entitles us access to various foreign and rare titles which could be useful to research in psychology.

 Other Area Resources: The collection at Eastern Virginia Medical School Library supports the subject of psychology and is open to ODU students at all levels. Materials at the EVMS Library specifically support the joint doctoral programs in clinical psychology.

Government Publications, part of the University Library’s collections, are used by students in all areas of psychology, especially those published by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare generally.

Electronic Resources play an increasingly important role in supporting the study of psychology. Web sites useful to psychology students and faculty include those maintained by professional association and data files originated by government agencies and other bodies. The index, PsycInfo, is also available electronically via the Internet.

Virtual Library of Virginia: There is a growing number of resources for all programs available through VIVA (Virtual Library of Virginia) including FirstSearch indexes and electronic journals available through Academic Press.
