The DOVE Collection contains materials organized into three different series which are Subject Files, Material Gathered Relating to 50th Anniversary of the End of Massive Resistance and ‘School Desegregation: Learn, Preserve and Empower’ Tour. The collection contains materials dated mainly from the early 1950s through the 1960s and 70s but also houses materials from the 21st Century related to the 50th Anniversary of the End of Massive Resistance. The collection also focuses on events, legal cases, media coverage, and photographs of desegregation in Virginia. Specific regions represented in the collection are the City of Norfolk, Prince Edward County, Farmville, Charlottesville and the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
The DOVE collection contains a wide range of materials such as memoirs, photographs, newspaper clippings and other periodicals, correspondence, meeting minutes, and legal papers. These materials cover the earlier stated time span of the early 1950s through the Commemoration of Desegregation events of the 21st Century.
Of note are a number of legal opinions, decrees and orders written by Judge Walter Hoffman regarding various legal cases related to desegregation of Virginia’s schools. The cases included are Ethel M. Norris v. State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, Michael Copeland v. School Board of the City of Portsmouth; Leola Pearl Beckett v. The School Board of the City of Norfolk, Virginia; Jerome A. Ad(t)kins v. The School Board of the City of Newport News, Virginia; Barbara J. Holmes v. Andrew A. Farley; Iris Jean Wilson v. Andrew A. Farley et al; James W. Holley, III v. The City of Portsmouth, VA.
