Brief Description:

This collection includes a variety of photographs covering the history of the University from 1930 to present day. Photographic subjects include administration, faculty and staff, buildings and grounds, athletics, academic departments, events, convocations, theater and musical performances, student and Greek organizations, and student life. In the 1990s other visual multimedia representations began to be added to the collection, which include VHS, DVD, microform, and photo CD’s.

The print photographs from the Old Dominion University Photographic and Multimedia Collection have been scanned and are available in the Old Dominion University Libraries Digital Collections.

Arrangement:

Series I: Photographs. Series I contains photographs from the 1930s to the present day.  Materials are arranged alphabetically within each decade. Photos include students, faculty and staff, academic and other University departments, buildings, student and staff organizations, athletics, performances, and events. This series is arranged chronologically by decade and alphabetically by category (i.e. Academics: Art, Student Life: Dorm Living).

Series II: Multimedia. Series II contains multimedia including VHS tapes, DVD’s, CD’s containing photo images, and microfilm. Topics covered include commencement and graduation, official promotional videos of the University, and coverage of select events and even classes. Materials are arranged by category (i.e. Commencements, Graduation Images, University Video) and then chronologically and date from 1994 onward.

Series III: Oversize Photos. Series III contains oversize photographs from the 1930s to the present day.  These include framed and unframed photos.

Series IV: Items in Remote Storage. Series IV contains oversize photographs on foam backing, negatives relating to the Old Dominion University photograph collection, slides relating to the history of the university, transparencies for postcards, stereo transparencies, and postcards.

Access Restrictions: The collection is open to researchers without restrictions.
