Arrangement:

Series I:  General Publication Series.  This series contains bound publications organized alphabetically by subject.  In folder 1, publications are as followed:  Reflections on the Liberal Arts in the Academic Tradition; Education for Leadership in Plato’s Republic with Parallels; Some Aspects of the Arts and Science in Early China From Prehistoric Items Through the T’ang Dynasty; Notes on Jamestown and Early Virginia the Origins and Growth of their Government; Notes on Education in Colonial Latin America; The Emergent Bolshevik State 1917-1919; The Arts of Music and Poetry in Plato’s Republic. In folder 2, publications are as followed:  Woodrow Wilson and the Russian Revolution in Part, a Study in Calvinistic Ethics; President Roosevelt’s Recognition of the Soviet Union.

Series II:  In the Case of Bryan vs. Hodges.  This series contains a publication about the case between Bryan and Hodges from March to October, 1941.

Series III:  Masontown History.  This series contains materials related to Dr. McClelland’s pursuit to preserve the history of Masontown, Pennsylvania.  Materials include newsletters, addresses, and a pageant.  Materials range from 1960 to 1962.

Series IV:  Poetry.  This series contains a variety of poetry written by Dr. McClelland, some bound, some unbound, as well as a newspaper clipping.  Materials are organized by date of publication.

Series V:  Other Writings.  This series contains documents that do not fit in with any of the other series.  These include a short story, some written articles he wrote for newspapers, and a newspaper clipping.  The contents range from 1942 to 1961.

Series VI: NATO Symposia. This series includes correspondence, programs, and other material related to the NATO Symposium directed by Dr. McClelland from 1955-1956.

Abstract

A history professor and Director of the Evening College at Norfolk Division of William and Mary. Materials include publications on a court case, his hometown of Masontown, poetry, Norfolk Division General Publications, and newspaper clippings, dated from 1941 to 1962.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of material written by or about Dr. Robert C. McClelland and dates from 1941-1962.  Materials include a publication on the William T. Hodges scandal at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary in 1941, Masontown Pennsylvania, poetry, newspaper clippings, and the NATO Symposium directed by Dr. McClelland from 1955-1956.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Robert Crawford McClelland was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania in 1901.  In 1914 he graduated from the Masontown public schools and went off to German Township High School where he graduated in 1918.  Afterwards he worked at the local coal mines for some time until he departed for college at the West Virginia University.  He graduated there in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  McClelland taught at College of William and Mary in Williamsburg from 1930 to 1937. While teaching there he also earned his Master’s degree. In 1937 he became a teaching fellow at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. He taught Latin, Greek and history. In the summers from 1945 to 1950, he returned to WVU as a teaching fellow and earned his Ph.D. in history.  In 1948, Dr. McClelland became the Director of the Evening College at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. He worked at the college until 1962.

Dr. McClelland was known for his involvement in preserving the history of Masontown in Pennsylvania.  He had compiled several histories of the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary including the Annals of The College of William and Mary in Norfolk (Norfolk: The College, 1930-60).  He also wrote and published a number of papers and poems.

Dr. McClelland died in Masontown, Pennsylvania in 1962.
