Library Hours for Spring Break
February 28th, 2010The University Libraries will be open the following hours for Spring Break:
- Saturday, March 6: 9am - 5pm (Regular hours)
- Sunday, March 7: 9am - 5pm (Reference open 1-5pm; Hofheimer Art Library, Diehn Composers Room, Microforms, ILL, Digital Services & Special Collections: Closed)
- Monday-Tuesday, March 8-9: 8am - 5pm
- Wednesday, March 10: 8am - 10pm (Hofheimer Art Library & Diehn Composers Room: 8am - 5pm)
- Thursday-Friday, March 11-12: 8am - 5pm
- Saturday, March 13: Closed
- Sunday, March 14: 1pm - midnight (Reference & Microforms: 1-10pm; Hofheimer Art Library & Diehn Composers Room: 1-5pm; ILL, Digital Services & Special Collections: Closed)
- Monday, March 15: Regular Hours Resume

Graduate Workshops: EndNote & ICPSR
February 23rd, 2010Two graduate workshops this week!
Thursday, February 25, 4:30-6:00 PM: Using EndNote with Library Databases to Save You Time!
Learn how to collect citations from the library's databases and export them into EndNote, a powerful tool for organizing and managing bibliographic citations. Both desktop and Web versions will be included. Bringing your own laptop would be very helpful. If you do bring a laptop, we ask that you have EndNote downloaded to it already. (See How To Use EndNote for instructions.)

Saturday, February 27, 10:00-11:30 AM: Using ICPSR to Access Social Science Research Data
vast archive of social science data, provided by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). ICPSR's data holdings, divided into 17 broad subject areas, are designed for use with statistical software, such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata. ICPSR is an organization with over 640 member colleges and universities around the world. Our access to ICPSR is funded with support from the ODU Office of Research.

Black History Month
February 15th, 2010"100 Years of Economic Empowerment: The National Urban League"
The library has mounted an exhibit to celebrate Black History Month 2010. The theme for this year's national Black History Month is "The History of Black Economic Empowerment." It is also the 100th anniversary of the National Urban League, "a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment in order to elevate the standard of living in historically underserved urban communities." Visit the exhibit in the lobby of Perry Library to learn more about the National Urban League. A Web Exhibit is also available.
Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library Blog
February 11th, 2010Are you studying art or interested in art and art-related information resources? The Elise N. Hofheimer Art library, located in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts building, makes available a collection of over 10,000 volumes on architecture, sculpture, drawing, painting, print media, photography, and arts & crafts. It also includes an art reference section, over 40 periodical subscriptions, and a guide to selected art resources on the Internet. Special features in the Art Library include: a current display of new art books, catalogs & news bulletins of the Chrysler Museum of Art, a bibliography of the History of Art & Art Index, workstations with access to online resources, slide viewing tables, VCRs & monitors, and a photocopy machine.

Lit Review in Science/Engineering
February 5th, 2010Need help in preparing your doctoral concept in science or engineering? This workshop is for you. Hundreds of thousands of journal articles, dissertations, government publications and other resources can be found online through various library online subscription services. Learn how to do a thorough literature review using the library's research information databases.
This popular workshop has been offered since April 2008 and gets better each semester. Edward promises that you will leave the workshop with lots of useful and helpful information.
This graduate workshop will be held on Saturday, February 13, from 10:00-11:30 AM in Perry Library, Room 163.

University Libraries open 11 am Feb. 2nd
February 1st, 2010Monday, January 31 - Update
The Old Dominion University, including the ODU Libraries, will open for business at 11 am on Tuesday, February 2nd.

Due to dangerous road conditions, the ODU campus is will be closed Sunday, January 31st and Monday, February 1st. This includes the Old Dominion University Libraries. Click here for University information.

From News @ Old Dominion:
"The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow in our area. Old Dominion University, including the Peninsula, Tri-Cities and Virginia Beach Higher Education Centers, will be closed Saturday, Jan. 30. Perry Library will open on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 12 noon. Friday evening classes will be held as scheduled. Read the full story for more details and continue to monitor this site for updates."
The EndNote workshop scheduled for Saturday will be postponed. EndNote help is available on the library's website. You may also request a research consultation.
