April 30th, 2012This is a friendly reminder that books and other items on loan from the University Libraries over the Spring Semester are due on May 21, 2012. These materials must be physically returned to the Libraries for check-in or for renewal.

Learning Commons hours extended
April 19th, 2012Beginning Sunday April 22, the Learning Commons will be open continuously through the end of finals on Thursday May 3. This extension is in response to feedback received from our users.

National Library Preservation Week Events
April 17th, 2012Next week is National Library Preservation Week: April 23- 27, 2012. The library has scheduled several events in the Learning Commons at Perry Library, Conference Room 1310-1311, from 10:00am- 12:00pm.
Come to any or all of the events and learn how ODU is preserving its resources and what YOU can do to preserve yours. (Note: Seating for these events is limited!)
Monday, April 23 “When Disaster Strikes” (Myles Henderson from WTKR Weather; David Elgin from Belfor Fire, Wind and Water Restoration, Rob Tench from ODU Libraries)

Welcome two new librarians
April 5th, 2012Valentina Neblitt-Jones and Lucinda Rush joined the library faculty this week.
Ms. Neblitt-Jones is Head of the Systems Development Department. She comes to ODU from the U.S. Department of the Navy where she has been a Computer Scientist/Systems Engineer at the SPAWAR Systems Center Atlantic since 2006. Prior to working for the Navy, Valentina worked here at Perry Library as a Government Publications Assistant and at various public libraries in Virginia. She has her MSLIS from Florida State University, her BS in Computer Science from Old Dominion University, and her BA in International Studies from Virginia Tech.
Ms. Rush is Education Services Reference Librarian and comes to us from Coastal Carolina University where she worked as a Weekend Circulation Supervisor and Reference and Outreach Librarian. Previously, she served as an Intern at the Horry County Memorial Library System and as an Adjunct Instructor for the Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway, SC. She has her MLIS from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Music Education from Shenandoah University, and a BA in Music from Longwood University.

"Spotlight on Scholarship"
April 5th, 2012“Spotlight on Scholarship” is a new series sponsored by the University Libraries. Every Fall and Spring semester, the Libraries will shine a spotlight on the scholarly output of one academic department through a reception and month-long exhibit.
The Communication and Theatre Arts Department is the focus of our first “Spotlight on Scholarship.” Traditional research and creative works produced by faculty for the past 10 years are featured in an exhibit in the Learning Commons from March 15 through April 30. Selected books, journal articles, posters, and flyers are on display.
Faculty will discuss some of their recent work at a reception on Friday, March 30, from 3-5pm in the Learning Commons Conference Room.

Friends of the ODU Libraries Annual Author Dinner
April 4th, 2012
The 18th Annual Author Dinner of the Friends of the ODU Libraries will feature guest speaker David Poyer, an American author and retired naval officer: "Readings by David Poyer: From Bute Street to Best Sellers." Poyer began writing in 1976 and has published 30 novels. He is called "the most popular living author of American sea fiction." Also at the dinner, the Friends will present their Outstanding Achievement Award to Sheri Colberg-Ochs, an ODU professor who specializes in diabetes and exercise research. Plan to participate in the Silent Auction, one of the major fundraising endeavors supporting the Friends. Anticipated offerings include a deep-sea fishing trip leaving from Nags Head; a Discovery Membership to the Town Point Club, including a lunch; a lamp from Mary Barnett’s Gifts; vacation packages; entertainment opportunities; and merchandise from some of the area’s finest boutiques. We hope to see you there!!

Learn how to collect citations from the library’s databases and export them into EndNote, a powerful tool for organizing and managing bibliographic citations. If you bring your own laptop, we ask that you already have EndNote downloaded. Instructions and information available from the Tutorials & How-Tos link on the library web site.
