EndNote and PubMed Workshops
March 16th, 2013On Wednesday, March 20, from noon-1:00pm, we’ll be offering an EndNote Advanced Q/A workshop. If you've been using EndNote but still have some nagging questions about how to use it better, come to this workshop. We'll answer your questions about how to edit output styles, how to get more output styles, how to create references when all you have is a pdf, etc. Contact Karen Vaughan kvaughan@odu.edu for registration information.
On Thursday, March 21, from noon-1:00pm, come to Searching with PubMed. You’ll learn how to use this health sciences database more effectively. The focus will be on using MeSH (medical subject headings) and filters for more targeted results. Contact Charity Karcher ckarcher@odu.edu for registration information.
"Spotlight On Scholarship" exhibit
March 16th, 2013Spotlight On Scholarship: STEM Education & Professional Studies
For the Spring 2013 semester, the University Libraries will shine a spotlight on the research and recent scholarly output of the Department of STEM Education & Professional Studies. The STEM Education & Professional Studies faculty is world renowned for their teaching, research, and service. Their areas of research are diverse and include fashion retailing, game and simulation development, development and implementation of learning technologies, policies that address sea level rise, research apprenticeship programs, STEM teacher education, and much more.
An exhibit in the Learning Commons from March 17-April 15 will feature statements of current research as well as selected journal articles and books from the past five years.
Faculty members from the department will present and discuss some of their recent work at a reception in the Learning Commons Conference Room on Thursday, April 4 from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Women's History Month Exhibit
March 12th, 2013“Women Inspiring Innovation Though Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics”
ODU Perry Library is celebrating Women’s History Month 2013 with an exhibit in the Learning Commons. The national theme for this year honors 18 women with “a remarkable range of accomplishments and a wide diversity of specialties including medicine, robotics, computer programming, atmospheric chemistry, architecture and primatology. These women’s lives and work span the centuries of American history and come from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.” Our exhibit, available through the month of March, features photographs and information about the achievements of these outstanding women.

“An Afternoon of Contemporary Song”
March 11th, 2013The Old Dominion University Libraries presents its 9th annual student concert, “An Afternoon of Contemporary Song,” featuring ODU vocal students under the direction of Brian Nedvin, on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 12:30-1:15 pm in the Diehn Composers Room.
The series was created by the Library to provide students with the opportunity to perform for the University community and to celebrate 20th century composition.
Vocal students will perform songs such as “Tigaroo,” “The Prayer,” and “Perfect” from Edges among other works.
The University Libraries’ Diehn Composers Room is located in Room 189 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the F. Ludwig Diehn Music Fund of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation.

Spring Break Hours – Learning Commons & Perry Library
March 6th, 2013During Spring Break, the Learning Commons@Perry Library will be open till 10 pm Sunday – Thursday for extended hours of service to ODU students, faculty and staff. Perry Library services and collections will remain open until 6 pm from Sunday - Friday.
Sun. 3/10: 9am – 10pm (upper floors close at 6pm)
Mon. 3/11-Thur. 3/14: 8am - 10pm (upper floors close at 6pm)
Fri. 3/15: 8am - 7:30pm (upper floors close at 6pm)
Sat. 3/16: 9am - 6pm (Learning Commons ONLY)

Workshop: Advanced Google Searching 3/7
March 3rd, 2013"Googling to the Max for Your Academic Research" -- This workshop focuses on advanced techniques in Google, Google Scholar, and Google Books to find sources appropriate for academic research.
