Poetry Slam a success!
April 18th, 2013Thanks to all those who participated in and attended the Library's first Poetry Slam on Tuesday April 16, celebrating National Library Week and National Poetry Month. We had 14 wonderful readers and two great hosts: Remica Bingham-Risher and Robbie Ciara. So, thank you everyone!!

19th Annual Author Dinner 4/18
April 9th, 2013The Friends of the Libraries 19th Annual Author Dinner will feature guest speaker Craig L. Symonds, Professor Emeritus at the United States Naval Academy. Symonds taught naval history and Civil War History for thirty years at the United States Naval Academy. In the 1970s he was a U.S. Navy officer and the first ensign ever to lecture at the prestigious Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. After his naval service, Symonds remained at the War College as a civilian Professor of Strategy from 1974-1975.
Dr. Symonds is the author of twelve books and the editor of nine others. His books have won the Barondess Lincoln Award, the Daniel and Marilyn Laney Prize, the S.A. Cunningham Award, the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Prize, and the John Lyman Book Prize three times. In 2009 he shared the $50,000 Lincoln Prize with James M. McPherson.
From 2005 to 2007 he was Chief Historian of the USS Monitor Center at the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, overseeing the opening and promotion of that exhibit.

The 19th Annual Author Dinner The Friends of the Libraries Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented to a faculty member from the College of Business and Public Administration. The award winner will be announced at the dinner.
Plan to participate in the Silent Auction, one of the major fundraising endeavors supporting the Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries.
Poetry Slam @ Perry Library 4/16
April 9th, 2013Celebrate National Library Week with a Poetry Slam!
On Tuesday, April 16 from 5:00-7:30 pm, Perry Library will host a Poetry Slam in the Learning Commons. Enter the competition or be in the crowd and root for your favorite. The entire ODU community is invited to participate.

"Lawyers Without Rights" Exhibit and Program
April 9th, 2013Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany under the Third Reich, an exhibit in the Learning Commons @ Perry Library, is sponsored by the ODU Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding. The exhibit will be available through April 30. A reception and panel discussion will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 5:30pm at Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. Learn to use this vast archive of social science data, provided by the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). ICPSR's data holdings, divided into 17 broad subject areas, are designed for use with statistical software, such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata. ICPSR is an organization with over 640 member colleges and universities around the world. Our access to ICPSR is funded with support from the ODU Office of Research.
