Preserving the history of school desegregation
March 16th, 2012"School Desegregation: Learn, Preserve, and Empower" is a project to find, catalog, and encourage the preservation of records that tell the story of Virginia’s school desegregation. The project will include a traveling exhibit from April to June to gather personal accounts and artifacts from the 1940s to the 1980s. Locations include Hampton, Richmond, Farmville, Lynchburg, Alexandria and the Eastern Shore.
The project hopes to fill in "the missing piece of history’s puzzle ... the thousands of untold stories of the people who personally experienced integration. From segregation to massive resistance to desegregation, they bore witness to emerging social change. Their stories help us to understand the enormity of the struggle that brought about that change."
On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, a news conference was held in Richmond to kick off the project which is a collaboration of the DOVE Project (Desegregation of Virginia Education), AARP Virginia, Virginia State Conference NAACP, and the Urban League of Hampton Roads.
The DOVE project was created nearly four years ago by Sonia Yaco, ODU's Special Collections Librarian and University Archivist, as a collaboration among universities, libraries, and archives in Virginia to identify and preserve materials relating to school desegregation. A growing catalog and other information is available from the ODU Library Web site.

Perry Library 4th floor books - Update
February 28th, 2012Update: Books with call numbers L7.T37 to ML 410.B4L597 are now accessible. Books with call numbers from ML 410 .B4L597 to PA6217 remain inaccessible.
Perry Library book collections on the east side of the 4th floor are temporarily inaccessible because of construction and clean-up work currently underway. Books in call number areas L1 – PA6217 (including education, music and art subjects) are sealed off and inaccessible to both patrons and library staff. Paging materials for patrons is not currently an option.
Until the clean-up is completed, you may consider one of the following options:
» Use Interlibrary Loan to request these materials. Arrival time usually ranges from 3-10 days.
» Find out if the book you need is available through a Virginia Tidewater Consortium (VTC) library. If it is, you can obtain a Consortium card at the 2nd floor Circulation Desk which allows you to check materials out from these local area libraries (faster than using interlibrary loan).
Please contact staff at the Learning Commons Help Desk or Circulation Desk for assistance.
