ODU's Annual Literary Festival is coming -- October 4-8, 2010. It's the 33rd annual festival. Access information about the festival, who's speaking, and when by visiting the Annual Literary Festival Web Site.

On the "Participants" page, you will find a link to books in the ODU Libraries by this year's festival authors. Check some out ahead of time and find out what these writers have to say.

Audio-visual materials housed in Perry Library (DVDs, VHS, CDs) have been moved to the new reserve room adjacent to the 2nd floor circulation desk. The loan period for these materials is 1 week, and you can check out 3 at a time.

To find out what feature films we have in our collection, do an Advanced Keyword search in the "ODU Only Catalog" from the library's Web site:

1. In the “Any Field” box enter “feature films”
2. In the “Material Type” box select “FILMS & VIDEO”
3. Click the “Submit” button
4. On the results screen that follows you will probably want to change the “Sorted by…” option from “relevancy” to “title.” This will redisplay the results list in alphabetical order by title.

The library has over 1,000 feature films that can be checked out.

As you may have noticed some changes are taking place at the Perry Library. As construction continues during the coming year on the creation of the Learning Commons and the Student Success Center you may find yourself taking different paths to the things you need. So here are a couple of pointers:

The front of the building is no longer accessible. The entrances to the Perry Library are now located on the sides of the building, one coming from BAL and the other from the parking garage on 43rd street.

• The circulation services area has been permanently relocated to the front of the second floor.
• The OCCS computer lab is temporarily located at the rear of the second floor.
• The reference and research services desk and computers are now located at the rear of the third floor.

When you enter the building you can either use the stairs to go to the upper floors or come in the first floor and immediately go to the elevators in the rear.

We will have staff near the entrances to answer any questions you might have so please ask.

We appreciate your patience while we create an exceptional space for you to use in the future.

Circulation Services Move from 1st to 2nd floor

The final walkthrough was done on the circulation offices and service areas. The office area was approved by everyone so the plan is still to move the circulation offices up on Monday or Tuesday next week. There are some issues with the other area so the circulation desk move will be delayed a few days.

Partitions erected on 1st-3rd floors

Temporary and permanent partitions are being constructed on the first, second and third floors. The partitions on the second and third floors are in anticipation of the third floor infill. The partitions on the first floor are in anticipation of the renovation work being done on first floor.

Reference Room Move from 1st to 3rd floor

The reference desk, public computers, and printers will be moving to the south side of third floor by August 25th. Wiring and cabling work is being done in advance of the move. The map alcove will be moved by the governments publications area.

Lobby 1st floor

The popular collection will be moved to second floor along with some of the lounge furniture. Other furniture will be either moved, surplused or stored.

North addition -- Front of library

The concrete has been poured and steel will be delivered the week of the 16th to 20th of August.

South addition -- Student Success Center

The steel has been completed and the concrete pour for the second floor has been completed.

Handicapped Ramp

The handicapped ramp on the west side of the library has been reopened and the railings have been installed.

Thanks to all staff and patrons who participated in our Snapshot Day on Tuesday, April 20.

Library Snapshot day is an initiative of ALA that, "provides a way for libraries of all types across a state, region, system or community to show what happens in a single day in their libraries."

On the south side addition (Student Success Center):
-- Steel is being erected and the anticipated completion for the steel is 8/13.
-- All concrete foundation work has been completed along with the majority of the underground sanitary, fire sprinkler and electrical work.
-- The closure of the lane has been approved and the lane will remain completely closed until they are through with major, consistent deliveries for the building; the exception is that the lane and sidewalk will be reopened for home football games.

On the north addition:
-- The underground storm and sanitary work has been completed as well as the concrete foundations.
-- The addition has been formed and a porous fill will be placed. Then the floor boxes and the under slab electrical will be installed.
-- A vapor barrier will be placed and then they will proceed with the pouring of the slab probably by the end of next week.

On the interior renovation:
2nd floor Circulation/Microforms:
-- The carpet tiles have been received and the carpet will be completed the first of next week.
-- The remaining countertop materials and panels will be completed by end of this week.
-- The microforms area has been completed except for paint and electrical touchups and cleaning. The doors are expected by 8/9.

Within the next two weeks, the installation of some permanent walls and some temporary walls with the existing library will be taking place to begin the process of separating the construction areas from the public spaces. Some of these walls will be on the second and third floor as well to prepare for the infill of third floor and the construction of the new steps. There will be access to all offices.

The new rail for the handicapped ramp on the west side of the building will be installed by 8/3.

The Criminal Justice Abstracts database has now joined the over 40 databases the library offers through EBSCOhost. It was previously part of the CSA/Illumina system.

According to EBSCO, "Customers will notice an immediate increase in the number of records in these EBSCOhost versions of the databases. Criminal Justice Abstracts has more than 235,000 records as opposed to the current 103,600 records on other platforms."

The Library Catalog allows you to limit your search to electronic books that the library subscribes to. From the Keyword option, type in your topic, and then select E-Books in the Format listing.
