Jon Michael Spencer was
a student of William Stoney at Hampton University. Even as an undergraduate,
Dr. Spencer's works were eurocentered but informed by a rich vocabulary
drawn from a variety of African American musical forms. In 1983, he set
aside music composition to pursue research and publication, focusing on
African American music and spiritual traditions. Dr. Spencer is currently
the Tyler and Alice Haynes Professor of American Studies at the University
of Richmond and has published fourteen books. |
