William Shannon Stoney
received his music education at Harvard and Yale Universities, and
received his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. After a short tenure as Chairman
of the Department of Music at Hampton University during the early 1960's,
Stoney devoted himself to university teaching and composition until his
retirement in 1985. As one of the first Hampton composers not connected
with the choir, Stoney wrote song cycles and instrumental works rather
than focusing on works for the choir. Also, he was a founding member and
long time president of the Tidewater Composers League.
