Vernon Perdue Davis Chronological Review

The 1950s

Lamentation for Organ
A Lamentation was written in 1952. In this year, Dr. Davis began collaborating with architect, James Scott Rawlings, on the first of the three books they produced together. This piece was written during one of Dr. Davis' many stays at "The Cedars," home of the Winston family in Winston, Virginia. Vernon Perdue Davis was very fond of the "Winstons of Winston" who effectively adopted him after his graduation from the University of Virginia.
Interlaken 1954
This piece, titled Interlaken, was composed in 1954 while Vernon Perdue Davis was staying at "Greentop," the home of the Somervilles in Winston, Virginia. The Somerville family was another branch of the Winston family of whom Dr. Davis was so fond. This piece, written for solo piano, is marked by several key and meter changes and is mildly rhapsodic in nature.
Psalm 150
Psalm 150 was written in 1958 and was published by the E. C. Schirmer Music Co. as a part of the Virginia Music Series. Dr. Davis published fifteen works, mostly sacred, in this series.Psalm 150 is a four-part anthem with organ accompaniment. The vocal lines exhibit chant-like qualities in places. Dr. Davis was very interested in composing plainchant and even wrote A Plainsong Primer, which was also published in the Virginia Music Series.
