Confide in Sleep Eternal: A Dramatic Poem for Soprano and Piano (1983)

I'm tired, World.
Sleep has penetrated my chamber soul,
Opening that fountain locks that
Releases slumber's fold.

I recall that lazy lullaby
Moma used to moan
When night time was
Too late for singin'.

My clock's hands point toward sleep.
I jus' gotta roll 'cross cover sheets
And drop burdening thoughts
In deep feathered pillows
That keep my dreams soft 'til midnight.

I'm tired, World.
I'm so tired I'm cryin' to sleep
And I'm dyin' to sleep.
...I'll die here.
I'm so used to bein' lazy here,
I'll jus' be lazy here
Forever.
