In December 1998 the Board of Visitors approved the naming of the university library for Patricia W. and J. Douglas Perry in recognition of their generous contribution to the University's capital campaign. The Perrys were also honored by the University with the Batten Award in May 1998 for their continuing support of Old Dominion University. Patricia Perry earned her bachelor's degree from Old Dominion as a returning student and mother of three.

Perry took on the challenge of balancing care of her family with a demanding academic load; she graduated with honors in 1989. She continues to be active in support of the University. In 1997 Perry was appointed to the Board of Visitors. She currently serves as Secretary to the Board of Visitors, member of the Academic Affairs Committee, and Chair of the Institutional Advancement Committee.

Perry has also been involved in many community service programs. She is vice chair of the Governor's Board on Child Abuse and Neglect and is an honorary board member of Samaritan House and Safe Harbor. She has also served as vice president of the board of trustees for St. Mary's Infant Home (1995-1997), member of the First Lady of the Commonwealth Advisory Council (1995-1996) and member of the board of the Virginia Stage Company (1993-1995).
