Wildcards

Similar to using truncation at the end of a word root, wildcards allow you to adjust for variations in spelling within a word -- again, this broadens your search.

Not all search systems allow for wildcard symbols within a word. But many do. A ? (question mark) is a common wildcard symbol to replace one character:

wom?n = woman or women

Because all systems are different, and change from time to time, it is a good idea to check the online HELP screens to find out what kinds of truncation are possible and what symbols should be used.
