Internet Explorer 6 Cache Clearing

In order to improve performance, many browsers use what is called a "cache". This is a location on the local hard drive where web pages are stored during a web session. The idea is that the web page likely won't change while the viewer is using the browser and it is much easier to retrieve the page if it has been stored locally. Sometimes, however, this cache does not get cleared out when the browser is closed, leaving old pages on the hard drive. This can pose problems for logging in through a proxy server such as that used by the ODU libraries.

The following describes how to manually clear out the browser cache:

  1. Go to Tools menu
  2. Select Internet Options at the bottom
  3. On the pop-up window in the middle, click the button labeled Delete Cookies
  4. Now click on the button labeled Delete Files
  5. On the next pop-up, click the check box labeled Delete all offline content, then click the OK button
  6. Once this is finished, click the button labeled OK at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Get completely out of the browser and then come back in
