FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT CAREERS:

Using Online Resources

An excellent starting point is the Old Dominion University Libraries Web site's Career & Employment Resources page.

A specific resource, Occupational Outlook Handbook, gives a succinct overview about the nature of the work, working conditions, training and qualifications, job outlook, earnings, and addresses for sources of additional information.

Using Reference Books

Browse the reference shelves under REF HF5381-HF5383 for several good resources.

Using the Library's Online Catalog You may use words like Artists, Biologists, Engineers, Sociologists, etc. as subject headings in the online catalog. The subheading Vocational Guidance may be especially relevant. (For example, you can search the catalog by subject under Biologists--Vocational Guidance)

Using Periodical Indexes (databases)

For finding articles, try Academic Serach Complete. This and many other databases pertinent to certain specific fields may prove helpful. All are available from the library's website, listed under Databases.

Preparing a resume

There are several books at the Old Dominion University Library Reference Desk, including: Extreme Resume Makeover -- REF DESK HF5383.K416 2007

Online resources include: CareerBuilder.com
