Chapter 1.2: Where are Primary and Secondary Sources Published?

The table below helps to outline where different types of publications fall along the primary source/secondary source spectrum.

Primary or Secondary
Comments
Books Usually secondary but occasionally primary
  • Most books are written by drawing conclusions from previously published scientific studies
Magazines & Newspapers Secondary
  • All popular magazines (Time, Newsweek, etc.) and newspapers are secondary sources
Scholarly Journals Usually primary
  • scholarly journals exist to publish scientific research study results
  • Some scholarly journals also publish secondary articles providing book reviews or summaries of previous studies in a field.
Government Reports May be either primary or secondary
  • Government agencies sometimes publish primary research studies, but may also produce secondary literature for general public use.
