Chapter 6.1: Differences Between Statutes and Court Cases

Statutes are laws enacted by federal or state legislatures. They are published in federal or state "codes" which are continuously updated to add new laws or remove older ones that have been repealed. Many of these codes are now available on the web. The main federal and state codes used by criminal justice students at Old Dominion University are:

Federal United States Code USC Gov Pub Shelves Y 1.2/5 http://uscode.house.gov/usc.htm
Commonwealth of Virginia Code of Virginia Va. Code Ref. KFV2430.A24 1950 http://leg1.state.va.us/000/src.htm
Other US States Varies Varies Not available in the library http://www.findlaw.com/11stategov/index.html
