Using LexisNexis™ Academic

First things first:

LexisNexis™ Academic is NOT a good choice for finding scholarly articles.

LexisNexis™ Academic IS a good choice if you're looking for:

  • articles from newspapers, trade journals, or popular magazines
  • law review articles, case law, or statutes
  • company and industry information and statistics

If you're looking for scholarly articles about your topic, pick a different database. If you need help picking a database, feel free to ask a librarian for advice.

Second things second:

If you need to brush up on your knowledge of Boolean searching (and, or), wildcards (! and *), and connectors (w/s, w/p, w/n, etc.), go to the LexisNexis™ Academic Knowledge Base for a quick tutorial:

Now, let's do some searching!

What type of information are you trying to find? Click on the options below to get search tips.

NEWS

To get the best results when searching for news in LexisNexis™ Academic, use the Guided News Search. Unlike the basic (and default) Quick News Search, the Guided News Search allows you to:

  • Select the category of news you'd like to search (World news, U.S. news, Business news, Legal news, etc.)

  • Select the type of source you'd like to search (Major newspapers, Regional newspapers, Trade magazines, etc.)

  • Combine search terms using Boolean operators (AND, OR, AND NOT, etc.) and wildcards (! and *)

  • Specify the type of term you'd like to search for (Title, Author, Company name, Ticker symbol, etc.)

  • Search for a specific date or date range

  • Search specific publications by their title

BUSINESS INFORMATION
If you just want business news, you can find it by using the Guided News Search (see above) and selecting "Business News" in Step 1 and then the type of business news you'd like in Step 2.

If you're looking for company and industry statistics or profiles, you'll want to select "Business" from the menu on the left-hand side of the LexisNexis™ page.

Using LexisNexis™ Academic Business Search, you can find:

  • Financial reports that include balance sheets, income statements, financial ratios, and more.

  • Company profiles that include executives' names and salaries, companies' products, competitors' names, companies' histories, and more.

  • Company comparisons by sales, income, employees, and location. Unfortunately, you can't compare two companies side-by-side.

  • SEC Filings & Reports (10-K annual reports, prospectuses, etc.)

EACH OF THESE SEARCHES HAS MULTIPLE OPTIONS.
BE SURE TO EXPLORE THEM!

LEGAL INFORMATION

This is the strong suit of LexisNexis™ Academic. Perry Library has other databases that are just as good or better than LexisNexis™ Academic for news and business searching, but nothing that even comes close for searching for law-related information.

If you just want legal news, you can find it by using the Guided News Search (see above) and selecting "Legal News" in Step 1.

If you're looking for law review articles, case law, or the text of statutes and codes, you'll want to select "Legal Research" from the menu on the left-hand side of the LexisNexis™ page.

Using LexisNexis™ Academic Legal Search, you can find:

  • full text articles from law reviews

  • the full text of federal and state cases

  • the full text of federal and state codes and regulations

  • cases by topic

  • Shepard's® citations for U.S. Supreme Court cases.

EACH OF THESE SEARCHES HAS MULTIPLE OPTIONS.
BE SURE TO EXPLORE THEM!
