SEARCH
TECHNIQUES
|
| Use AND between search terms when you want to find records that
contain both terms, not just one or the other. AND
will narrow your search.
diabetes and adolescents
|
diabetes
4859 records adolescents 3243 records diabetes AND adolescents 136 records |
| Use OR when you want to find records that contain any one or
all of your search terms. Use OR to search for synonyms.
OR will broaden your search.
adolescents or teenagers
|
adolescents
3243 records teenagers 438 records adolescents OR teenagers 3568 records |
| Use NOT to limit your search to records that contain one
term and not another.
adolescents not adults
|
adolescents
3243 records adults 6246 records adolescents NOT adults 2948 records |
NOTE: Use NOT with caution -- you may exclude relevant records. In the search above, you would not retrieve this relevant article: "The management of diabetes in adolescents and young adults", because it contains the word "adults."
In some cases, you may need to use parentheses if you are trying to combine ORs or ANDs in the same statement.
diabetes and (adolescents or teenagers) Without the parentheses, the computer may interpret your statement in an erroneous way:
(diabetes and adolescents) or teenagers retrieving all articles with the word teenagers. Many databases provide boxes for you to organize your search terms. Here is an example of the "CINAHL Plus with Full Text" advanced search screen:

YOUR TURN: For your topic, use Boolean operators AND and OR to combine your search terms.
