B. How to Obtain Books
at ODU Library and Elsewhere
If you used ODU Library's online catalog
to identify books on your topic, the next step is to obtain those books.
The catalog entry will tell you where the book is shelved in the library,
its call number, and whether it is available or checked out.
- Books in the ODU Library are arranged
by the Library of Congress Classification System. Each book receives
an LC call number, which is actually a combination of letters and numbers.
The LC Classification for Medicine is R, with a further breakdown:
RA= Public Aspects of Medicine; RD= Surgery; RT= Nursing; etc.
- The record for AIDS : Prevention
Through Education indicates that it is on the 4th floor.
- The full LC Classification System
can be found on the Web--see the Resources section of this tutorial for a link.
- In the ODU Library, call numbers
A-L are shelved on the 3rd floor of the library, while M-Z are shelved
on the 4th.
