GUIDED SEARCH OF INFOTRAC
HEALTH REFERENCE CENTER
For Reference Book Exerpts

Step 1.  Connect to InfoTrac.
On the Perry Library Homepage, scroll down to select InfoTrac from the "Quick Links" pull-down menu at the lower left. Click InfoTrac.

If you are home, you will see the EasyProxy Login screen which asks for your user name. Enter your campus ID number (UIN).

Step 2.  From the list of InfoTrac databases, choose Health Reference Center Academic. You can do this in either of two ways:
Uncheck the box that says Select All, then check the box beside Health Reference Center Academic and click Submit; or,
Click directly on the linked words, Health Reference Center Academic.

Step 3: On the Health Reference Center main search page, in the light blue bar across the top of the page, notice that you can use the default Basic Search, Subject Guide Search, Publication Search, or Advanced Search. Click on the link to Advanced Search.

Step 4: On the resulting page, in the first search box, type diabetes. In the second search box, type blood monitoring. Notice that the search system automatically places the Boolean operator AND between the two search boxes. Underneath the search boxes, notice that you can Limit the results of your search by checking boxes to limit to materials that are ful-text, that are peer-reviewed, or to documents with images. If you were searching for journal articles, it would be a good idea to limit your results to peer-reviewed journals. Right now we are looking mainly for online reference works on a topic, so don't check any of the limit boxes. Proceed with your search for diabetes and blood monitoring by clicking on the Search button.

Step 5: You will see a list of results that have been sorted into tabbed sections called Magazines & Journals, Reference, News and Multimedia. Click on the tab that says Reference. Scroll down through the list of reference materials pertaining to diabetes and blood monitoring that have been retrieved by your search. You will find entries from medical encyclopedias, dictionaries, and Thomson-Gale's CareNotes and Clinical Reference Systems. Notice that there is a box to the left of each record in which you can place a check mark to mark that item for later printing or to e-mail that record. You can click on Marked Items at the top of the page to retrieve a list of your marked records.

Step 6: View the complete record for one of the items by clicking the Full-Text link. On the resulting page, notice that just above the full text there is a link that says How to Cite. If you wish to quote or paraphrase text from this reference source, you can click on the How to Cite link and choose among MLA, APA or plain text citation styles.

Step 7: Output Options
Across the top of the page, in a white bar, you will find your output options. Click on InfoMark to get a URL that you can copy and paste to return to the same page later. Click on Marked Items to get a list of the citations you have marked. Click Print to select and format items that you wish to print and send them to a printer. Click E-mail to select and format items that you wish to e-mail. If you have a single full-text item open, you can also choose Download to save the full text to your hard drive, memory stick or disk.
