What are periodicals anyway?

The term periodical describes an item that is published on a regular basis, whether weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, etc.

Periodicals include:

  • Newspapers, such as The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times
  • Popular interest magazines, such as Newsweek, Cycle World and Redbook
  • Scholarly journals, such as New England Journal of Medicine, American Historical Review and Asian Affairs.

Sometimes periodicals have such words as Bulletin, Review, Digest, News, Newsletter, Journal, Reporter, Review or Magazine as a part of their titles, but many do not.
