1b. Do you need an idea?

If you need an idea for a research paper, speech, etc. try one or more of these approaches:

  • Browse the subjects listed in a library research database or printed periodical index that deals with your area of study.
  • Use the Idea Generator link from the library Web page (under Research Assistance).
  • Examine a book such as What Can I Write About? or An Index of Ideas for Writers and Speakers.

Be sure you refine your topic to one that is concise and manageable. When in doubt, ask your instructor or a reference librarian for advice. Use Start Your Research Here! (also under Research Assistance) for advice on good research strategy and access to some good online resources.
