How do I find image, sound or other media files?

Search commands are different in each search engine. The search engines such as AltaVista and Google tend to give you more options. Always check the help screen for the search engine's commands. You may need to check under "advanced searching" or "search tips" to find them.

Here are some useful commands from AltaVista

image:filename

Searches for web pages with images under a specific filename. Upper and lower case are important in using this command.

image:jupiter

Use to find pages with images called jupiter

domain:domainname

Searches for Web pages within a specified domain

domain:edu

Use to find pages from educational institutions

url:anynameinurl

Searches for Web pages with a specific word or phrase in the URL.

url:odu

Use to find all the times the word odu is used somewhere within the URL on a server

NOTE: Both AltaVista and Google can search for images automatically by clicking on the appropriate link or button.
