Interfaith Studies Reading Group

Perry Library of Old Dominion University will host a free 5-part Interfaith Studies Reading Group, led by Dr. Steven Jolly and Dr. Lawrence Forman.

The group will begin with The Song of the Bird, in which Anthony de Mello shares 124 stories from a variety of traditions, both ancient and modern, using the age-old medium of parable to illustrate profound contemporary realities about our everyday concerns and our common spiritual quest.

Next, the group will explore Understanding Fundamentalism: Christian, Islamic and Jewish Movements, in which Richard Antoun, an anthropologist specializing in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, compares the growth of fundamentalism in the three monotheistic faiths.

All programs will be held in room 151, Perry Library, Old Dominion University, on 45th Street, just off Hampton Boulevard in Norfolk. Participants may park free in the lot in front of the Library. Dr. Steve Jolly grew up in Shelby, NC, earned a BA in communications from N. C. State University, a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in sociology from N.C. State, where he taught in the sociology department for ten years. After serving as an associate minister for 29 years, he became pastor at Freemason Street Baptist Church in 2002.

With over 30 years of service as a congregational Rabbi in the local community, Dr. Lawrence Forman is currently the Director of the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding at Old Dominion University. He is also the faculty advisor for the ODU's Better Understanding Club, an interfaith organization devoted to furthering dialogue and understanding between different cultures and faiths.
