LIBNEWS-L: New Resources and Services at Old Dominion University Libraries April 5, 2005 * Workshop for Citation Searching: Thursday, April 7 * Friends of the Library Eleventh Annual Author Dinner Scheduled for April 12 * New Database: Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI) * New Project Muse Title: "Hastings Center Report" ==> WORKSHOP FOR CITATION SEARCHING: APRIL 7 The online version of Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index is ISI's Web of Science (or Web of Knowledge). Tracy Matthews from ISI will deliver a 1.5 hour workshop for interested faculty, staff and grad students beginning at 9:30 AM on April 7 in Perry Library, room 163. This resource is an extremely important one, especially for faculty who need to document the value of their own publications. For more information or to register for the workshop, please contact Nancy Schafer at nschafer@odu.edu or 683-5909. ==> FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY ELEVENTH ANNUAL AUTHOR DINNER SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 12 The Friends of the Old Dominion University Library are pleased to announce that the guest speaker at this year's Annual Author Dinner will be John A. Adam, University Professor and Professor of Mathematics, speaking on the topic: "Innumeracy – A Lighthearted Look at a Serious Problem." The Friends of the Library Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented to Karl H. Schoenbach, Eminent Scholar and Director of the Center for Bioelectrics. The dinner will be held in the Hampton/Newport News Rooms, Webb Center. The reception will begin at 6:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. (A vegetarian entrée is available upon request.) Tickets for the dinner are $25 (Life Members’ tickets are $20); checks made payable to Friends of the Library should be mailed to: Friends of the Library - Author Dinner / 229 Perry Library / Old Dominion University / Norfolk VA 23529-0256. Reservations must be made by Friday, April 8. John A. Adam is a University Professor and Professor of Mathematics. He was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Rochester (NY) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering prior to coming to Old Dominion University as a full professor of mathematics in 1984. While his research has covered a variety of areas, including astrophysical fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, and singular differential equations, during the last 15 years Dr. Adam has been involved in mathematical biology, specifically developing mathematical models of tumor growth and metastasis, and mathematical models for wound healing in bone. He is currently working on mathematical models of atmospheric optical phenomena, such as rainbows, halos and glories. He has published 87 papers in scientific and mathematical journals, and made about 85 professional presentations (both invited and contributed) at universities and research institutions, as well as talks at the middle school, high school and community college levels. Dr. Adam is co-editor of a book on mathematical aspects of tumor/immune system interactions and has recently published Mathematics in Nature: Modeling Patterns in the Natural World. Karl H. Schoenbach, Eminent Scholar and Director of the Center for Bioelectrics, joined the faculty at Old Dominion University in 1985. He worked on photoconductive switches until 1993, but now concentrates his research on high-pressure glow discharges, discharges in liquids, and environmental and medical applications of pulse power technology. He has chaired a number of workshops and conferences, among them the 1991 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science. Most recently he has organized the First International Symposium on Nonthermal Medial/Biological Treatments Using Electromagnetic Fields and Ionized Gases. Dr. Schoenbach has been awarded 9 patents, and others are in process. He was awarded the 2002 Excellence in Research Award by the College of Engineering and Technology. Over 2/3 of the tools are in medical and nursing areas such pain measurement, quality of life assessment, and drug efficacy evaluation. Coverage is from 1985-present. Access HaPI from the library's "Databases" page either by title or through the subjects "Health, Nursing, Medicine" or "Sciences." Because HaPI is a library subscription, IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you will need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. Contact Nancy Schafer (nschafer@odu.edu) with questions or comments about this new database. ==> NEW PROJECT MUSE TITLE: "HASTINGS CENTER REPORT" * The "Hastings Center Report" is a leading journal in bioethics featuring original scholarship and commentary on issues in health, medicine, medical research, and biotechnology as they affect individuals, communities, and societies. It is published by The Hastings Center, an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization. To access this and other Project Muse journals, click "Project Muse" on the library's "Journals, Magazines, Newspapers" page or search by individual journal title. Because Project Muse is available through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ***** Next Issue: April 12, 2005 ***** Find the Libnews-L archives at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/libinfo/publications/libnews/
