LIBNEWS-L: New Resources and Services at Old Dominion University Libraries October 4, 2005 * PAIS Archive Now Available Back to 1915 * Training for Cambridge Scientific Databases: October 12 and 13 * 28th Annual Literary Festival This Week: October 3-7 * University Libraries to Hold 31st Annual Book Sale: November 2-5 ==> PAIS ARCHIVE NOW AVAILABLE BACK TO 1915 PAIS Archive is a retrospective database supplementing PAIS International and containing more than 1.2 million records covering the years 1915-1976. The PAIS databases cover topical public and social issues and the making and evaluating of public policy. Worldwide in geographic scope, PAIS indexes publications in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish that deal with public affairs. Journal articles, books and book chapters, and government publications are included. PAIS is available through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) from the Library's "Databases" page. Choose PAIS by title or by subject category: Government Information, Political Science & Law, or Social Sciences. Because CSA databases are available through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ==> TRAINING FOR CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC DATABASES: OCTOBER 12 and 13 "Illumina," the search interface for the 70 databases in the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) system, has many powerful new features. It allows you to search a single database or a collection of databases by subject area. For journals to which ODU has an online subscription, Illumina provides a link to the full text article. For other journals, Illumina connects you to our Interlibrary Loan service. In most databases, you will also find links to cited references. Citations can be saved in any of 12 styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. CSA contains many science databases covering life sciences, environmental and aquatic sciences, computer sciences, materials sciences, engineering, and aerospace. On Wednesday, October 12, at 10am, come to a library workshop to learn about tips and techniques for searching science databases through Illumina. On Thursday, October 13, at 2pm, the library workshop will focus on the databases in the social sciences (including PAIS). The workshops are 30 minutes and are held in Room 163 of Perry Library. Reservations, though not mandatory, are very helpful to us in planning. To register, or for more information, email Cynthia Wright Swaine at cswaine@odu.edu. ==> 28th ANNUAL LITERARY FESTIVAL THIS WEEK -- OCTOBER 3-7, 2005 Be sure to attend the 28th Annual Literary Festival going on this week, October 3-7. Be sure to attend the festival. A full schedule is at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/litfest/28th To promote the 28th Annual Literary Festival, the Library has mounted a lobby exhibit featuring photos and biographies of this year's writers.
