LIBNEWS-L: New Resources and Services at Old Dominion University Libraries October 11, 2005 * Training for Cambridge Scientific Databases: October 12 and 13 * New Interface for the Oxford English Dictionary * New Business Librarian: Steve Litherland * October 9-15: Archives Week ==> TRAINING FOR CAMBRIDGE SCIENTIFIC DATABASES: OCTOBER 12 and 13 Plan to attend a 30-minute workshop on searching "Illumina," the search interface for the 70 databases in the Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) system. Illumina has many powerful new features. It allows you to search a single database or a collection of databases by subject area. For journals to which ODU has an online subscription, Illumina provides a link to the full text article. For other journals, Illumina connects you to our Interlibrary Loan service. In most databases, you will also find links to cited references. Citations can be saved in any of 12 styles, including APA, MLA, Chicago, etc. A workshop on Wednesday, October 12, at 10am, will feature tips and techniques for searching science databases through Illumina. On Thursday, October 13, at 2pm, the workshop will focus on the databases in the social sciences. The workshops are 30 minutes and are held in Room 163 of Perry Library. Reservations, though not mandatory, are very helpful to us in planning. To register, or for more information, email Cynthia Wright Swaine at cswaine@odu.edu. ==> NEW INTERFACE FOR THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY "The Oxford English Dictionary [OED] is the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language over the last millennium. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past. It traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books." The online version of the OED has been available since 2000, but it has a whole new look. With the new version, users may: * Search the equivalent of 23 volumes of information with speed and ease * Find a term when you know the meaning but have forgotten the word * Find words that have come into English via a particular language * Search for quotations from a specified year * Search for all quotations from a particular author and/or work * Display entries according to your needs - for the first time you can turn pronunciation, etymologies, variant spellings, and quotations on and off * Gain unique online access to at least 1,000 new and revised words each quarter * Compare revised entries with entries from the Second Edition to see how language has changed and how new scholarship has increased understanding of our linguistic and cultural heritage Access the OED from the library's "General Reference Sources" page under "Dictionaries and Thesauri." Because OED is available through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ==> NEW BUSINESS LIBRARIAN: STEVE LITHERLAND Steve Litherland is our new Business Reference Librarian. He has been with Old Dominion University Libraries since 1996 when he started as a student assistant. Most recently he was a Library Specialist I in the Reference Department. The work of these institutions and individuals gives us a sense of being part of a larger picture and helps us begin to see ourselves connected to others-family, community, nation or a group defined by ethnicity, religion, work or play." This year's theme is "In Archives We Trust: Preserving Virginia History for Her People." A variety of programs and activities have been scheduled to highlight the work of archivists and the collections they manage. The 2005 Virginia Archives Week poster sponsored by The Library of Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference features a 1940s interior photograph of the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary Library Reading Room.
