Published annually. * "Studies in Bibliography" (SB) is one of the pre-eminent journals in the fields of analytical bibliography, textual criticism, manuscript study, and the history of printing and publishing. Founded in 1948 by Fredson Bowers of the University of Virginia and published annually since then, SB continues to maintain its reputation as a forum for the best textual and bibliographical work being done anywhere in the world. Because Project Muse is available through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ==> TRAINING FOR ABI/INFORM BUSINESS DATABASE: OCTOBER 24 and 25 On October 24 at 10am and October 25 at 2pm, the library is providing workshops on using ABI/INFORM, a business database available through ProQuest. ABI/Inform provides business and management full-text articles from North American and worldwide research sources, plus information on 60,000 companies. Come and learn more about the database and how to search it more efficiently. The workshops are 30 minutes and are held in Room 163 of Perry Library. Reservations, though not mandatory, are very helpful to us in planning. To register, or for more information, email Cynthia Wright Swaine at cswaine@odu.edu. ==> FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY FALL FORUM: OCTOBER 28 The Friends of the Library will be hosting their Fall Forum on Friday, October 28, 2005, at 1:00pm in Room 104 of the Batten Arts and Letters Building. Peter Paret, Professor Emeritus of the School of Historical Studies at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, will be presenting this year's forum: "The History of War and Other Histories." The lecture is presented in memory of Craig M. Cameron, former Old Dominion University faculty member. Professor Paret’s undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley were interrupted by the Second World War, in which he served as a Staff Sergeant in the 1st Infantry Regiment in the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns. After the war, he completed his studies for the B.A. at Berkeley and continued with graduate study at King’s College, University of London, where he received the Ph.D. He has held academic appointments at Princeton University, the University of California at Davis, Stanford University – where he was the first Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History – and as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at the Institute for Advanced Study. Professor Paret is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the Leo Baeck Institute, a Member of the American Philosophical Society, which awarded him the Thomas Jefferson Medal, an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics, and an Honorary Member of the German Clausewitz Society. The German government awarded him the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit. Two of his essays won the Moncado Prize of the Society of Military History, from which he also received the Samuel Eliot Morison Award. He holds the honorary degrees Doctor of Literature, University of London, 1992; Doctor of Letters, University of South Carolina, 1995; and Doctor of Humanities, the College of Wooster, 1996. Free parking will be available in the parking garage on 43rd Street, just past the Perry Library. ==> UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES ANNUAL BOOK SALE: NOVEMBER 2-5 Mark your calendars for the University Libraries 31st Annual Book Sale on Wednesday November 2 through Saturday November 5. Donations of books, magazines, audio/ videotapes, and compact discs are being accepted at the Circulation Desk in Perry Library through Mon. Oct. 31. The sale will be held in Room 151, the Perry Library Conference Room, from 9am to 6pm on Wednesday and Thursday, from 9am to 7pm on Friday, and from 9am to noon on Saturday. Prices for the sale are $2.00 for hardbacks, $1.00 for paperbacks, $.25 for magazines. Various multimedia will be available. The sale is open to the public. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Library Student Assistant Achievement Award Fund. ==> COMPUTER LITERACY SERIES: SEARCHING THE ODU LIBRARY WEBSITE AND DATABASES: NOVEMBER 18 The Center for Learning Technologies is offering a Special Event to university faculty: "Computer Literacy Series: Searching the ODU Library Website and Databases" on Friday, November 18, 2005, 9:00 AM in Gornto 411. Here is your chance to learn to use online resources provided by the library and to try out database features and searching techniques, such as Boolean operators, proximity searching, wildcards, and more.
