In SURF, an introduction to the Library Website, you will learn how to find the things you need: articles, books, media--and additional help. In TURF, an instructional tour of the library, you will see key areas of the library and learn how to use them. These brief sessions begin at 12:30 PM as follows: SURF: Tuesdays, January 16 and 23 (2007) TURF: Thursdays, January 18 and 25 (2007) There is no need to register; interested persons should come to the lobby and meet the librarian in front of the poster advertising the session. These sessions are intended for interested individuals, not whole classes. ------------------------------------------------------- ==> NEW BUSINESS DATABASES: MORNINGSTAR and IBISWORLD The library now subscribes to two more business databases. * "Morningstar Library Edition" provides data and analysis for stocks and mutual funds. You can create lists of securities according to your own criteria, or use Morningstar's screening criteria. It also has a tool that lets you build your own portfolios and analyze performance. Our subscription is limited to three simultaneous connections, so be sure to click the "End Session" button when you're finished. * "IBISWorld Industry Market Research Reports" provides reports using Michael Porter's "Five Competitive Forces" framework with data on key statistics, industry structure and analysis, and factors that affect the industry. Please note that our subscription only includes access to the industry reports. Access these databases from the library's "Databases" page by title or subject "Business & Economy." Because they are available through library subscription, IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. Please contact Steve Litherland, Business Reference Librarian, at slitherl@odu.edu with any questions or comments you may have about these databases. --------------------------------------- ==> LIBRARY MATERIALS DUE JANUARY 17 Library items checked out to faculty, staff or graduate students prior to December 06, 2006 are scheduled for return or renewal by January 17, 2007. You may renew your material on-line by going to http://iii.lib.odu.edu/patroninfo, via e-mail to circ1@lib.odu.edu, or in person at the Circulation Desk where you may also return any items that are no longer needed. The spring due date for semester loan material is May 18, 2007. If you have any questions, please call Robert Stone, Circulation Services Supervisor, at 3-5534 [rstone@odu.edu]. ------------------------------------------- ==> A NOTE ABOUT COURSE READING MATERIALS The library maintains a reserve collection of books assigned by faculty members. For assistance, contact Robert Stone, Circulation Services Supervisor - rstone@odu.edu - or go to "Course Reserves" from the "Services" section of the library's Website. For articles, rather than simply listing them in a syllabus, faculty are asked to either link to, download, or scan items and then post them to Blackboard for students to read. Contact Karen Vaughan, kvaughan@odu.edu, for help with identifying and posting articles. For items not available through the library's collections or databases, contact Stuart Frazer, Interlibrary Loan Librarian, sfrazer@odu.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------ ==> FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY GROUP SPONSORS "SPORTS WRITING PANEL" The Friends of the Library panel discussion, "Sports Writing: More Than A Game," will be held in room 102 of the Mills Godwin Building on Tuesday, February 6, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. A panel of practicing sports writers -- Jim Ducibella (a sportswriter at The Virginian-Pilot since 1981), Bob Molinaro (who has written a column for more than 20 years) and Paul White (a member of The Virginian-Pilot sports staff since 1993) -– will debate ethical issues, such as: * Should sports writers be fans or boosters on behalf of local teams? * Is it worth going to jail over a sports story to protect an anonymous source? * Young athletes, women athletes: do they merit deferential treatment by sports writers? This event is free and open to the public. For additional information please contact Fern McDougal at 683-4141 or via e-mail at fmcdouga@odu.edu. -------------------------------------------------- ==> "LET IT SNOW" EXHIBIT IN PERRY LIBRARY LOBBY Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow! is the theme of Perry Library's lobby exhibit for the month of January. Included in one section are books and recordings by authors and performers whose names are Snow, Snowball, Snowden, Snowling and Snowman. Another section of the exhibit features poems about snow and book titles that include the word snow. The most colorful section showcases children's picture books about snow. An adjacent display case features library resources on global warming, and asks the question, Will it snow? Drop by and take a look before everything melts! ------------------------------- Next Issue: January 15, 2007 ------------------------------- Find the Libnews-L archives at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/libinfo/publications/libnews
