Take advantage of these trials while they last, keeping in mind that there is no assurance that these products will be purchased. * History Reference Online (03/12/2007 to 04/05/2007): a fully searchable database containing hundreds of encyclopedias, handbooks, and dictionaries. * Armed Conflict Database (03/05/2007 to 04/03/2007): an interactive and user-friendly source of information on 70 armed conflicts. * Communications & Mass Media Complete (03/01/2007 to 05/29/2007): incorporates the content of CommSearch and Mass Media Articles Index along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study ... includes full text for 285 journals. * Aluka: African Scholarly Resources (02/05/2007 to 06/2007): networked digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa. Learn about Google Scholar, Google Books, Google Uncle Sam, and a variety of advanced searching techniques. Come and see what's great about Google these days. Registration is not required but is helpful to us in planning. Email cswaine@odu.edu. * SCANNING SERVICES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS: Saturday, March 24, 11am-noon, Digital Services Center, 3rd floor Library The Digital Services Center is open to ODU graduate students and faculty for work related to ODU courses and research. In this workshop, you can learn about: -- Creating PDFs -- Using TextBridge to convert documents to Word format -- Scanning images to include in papers, presentations, etc. -- Converting slides into images The workshop will be held in the Digital Services Center--3rd floor of Perry Library. Email jjustis@odu.edu. -------------------------------------------------------------- ==> MARCH EXHIBIT: "WOMEN IN JAMESTOWN AND COLONIAL VIRGINIA" In recognition of Women's History Month and the Jamestown 2007 celebration, the Old Dominion University Libraries is featuring an exhibit, "Women in Jamestown and Colonial Virginia." The exhibit is available through the month of March 2007 in the main lobby of Perry Library. The exhibit includes many books and images illustrating the daily life and habits of Native American and Colonial women. The concert will include works by John Duke, Samuel Barber, Joshua Lessard, George Gershwin, and Byron K. Yasui. The University Libraries' Diehn Composers Room is located in Room 189 of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.  This event is free and open to the public and is made possible by a grant from the F. Moore, Diehn Librarian Archivist, at 683-4175. ----------------------------------------------------------- ==> NEW COURSE THIS FALL: "RESEARCH IN THE INFORMATION AGE" AL 201: Research in the Information Age, a one-credit, eight-week hybrid course, will be offered for the first time Fall 2007. Students at any level and from any major will benefit from taking this course. Taught by librarians Cynthia Swaine and Karen Vaughan, the focus is information literacy, which includes such aspects as evaluating resources and the ethical use of information (plagiarism and copyright included). It will also cover the use of major "finding tools" and digital libraries, database structures and search techniques, choosing and refining a topic for research, and the cycle of information.
