Jacobs * Women's History Month Exhibit Ends Soon * Meet Me at PubMed - Workshop: Tuesday, April 3 * Friends of the Library 13th Annual Author Dinner: April 24 --------------------------------------------------------- ==> NEW YORK TIMES IN THE LIBRARY -- FREE FOR ONE MONTH In conjunction with the campus appearance of New York Times Chief Diplomatic Correspondent Steve Weisman on Friday April 13th, the NY Times is distributing 250 papers gratis to the campus community for a one-month period beginning Monday 3/26. There is a stand in the lobby of Perry Library. Come and get your New York Times free, while they last. There are also stands available in the lobbies of BAL, Diehn, and Webb Center. ----------------------------------------------------------- ==> NEW DATABASE: GERRITSEN COLLECTION OF ALETTA H. JACOBS The library has recently purchased the Gerritsen Collection of Aletta H. Jacobs. It contains the full text of books, pamphlets and periodicals reflecting the evolution of a feminist consciousness and the movement for women's rights. This collection, dating 1543-1945, was started in the late 1800's by Dutch physician Aletta Jacobs and her husband C.V. Gerritsen, and has since become the greatest single source for the study of women's history in the world. Access the Gerritsen Collection from the library's Databases page by title, or by subject: History or Social Sciences. Offcampus access is restricted; you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. -------------------------------------------- ==> WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH EXHIBIT ENDS SOON In recognition of Women's History Month and the Jamestown 2007 celebration, the Old Dominion University Libraries is featuring an exhibit, "Women in Jamestown and Colonial Virginia." The exhibit is available through the month of March 2007, in the main lobby of Perry Library. A Web companion is at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/exhibits/womenshistorymonth/2007. The exhibit includes images and textual materials illustrating the daily life and habits of Colonial and Native American women. Learn how to use this health sciences database in very effective ways. The focus will be on: -MeSH (medical subject headings) -Clinical queries (systematic reviews) -Special queries (Health Services research) Janet Justis will conduct two sessions on Tuesday, April 3: 10-11am and 2-3pm, both in Perry Library Room 163. Registration is not required but is helpful to us in planning, since space is limited -- contact Janet Justis at jjustis@odu.edu. ------------------------------------------------------------- * FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY 13th ANNUAL AUTHOR DINNER: APRIL 24 The Friends of the Old Dominion University Library are pleased to announce that the guest speaker at this year's Annual Author Dinner will be Janet Peery, Associate Professor of Creative Writing at ODU, and author of the newly released novel, What the Thunder Said. Ms. Perry will speak on "Making It Up As You Go Along: The Writing Life."  The Friends of the Library Outstanding Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Douglas Ziegenfuss, Professor of Accounting at ODU. The dinner will be held in the River Rooms of Webb Center on the ODU campus.  The reception will begin at 6:00 pm, and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm.  A vegetarian entrée is available upon request.  Tickets for the dinner are $30 (Life Members’ tickets are $25); checks made payable to Friends of the Library should be mailed to:   Friends of the Library - Author Dinner / 229 Perry Library / Old Dominion University / Norfolk VA 23529-0256.  Reservations must be received by Wednesday, April 18.
