LIBNEWS-L: New Resources and Services at Old Dominion University Libraries September 11, 2007 * Surf n Turf This Week and Next * Lexis Nexis Academic Gets a New Look * 2006 Journal Citation Reports Now Available ------------------------------------ ==> SURF n TURF THIS WEEK AND NEXT Surf n Turf are two separate events offered to Old Dominion University faculty, staff, and students. In SURF, an introduction to the Library Website, you will learn how to find the things you need: articles, books, media--and additional help. In TURF, an instructional tour of the library, you will see key areas of the library and learn how to use them. These brief sessions begin at 12:30 PM as follows: SURF: Tuesdays, September 11 and 18 (2007) TURF: Thursdays, September 13 and 20 (2007) There is no need to register; interested persons should come to the lobby and meet the librarian in front of the poster advertising the session. These sessions are intended for interested individuals, not whole classes. ------------------------------------------- ==> LEXIS NEXIS ACADEMIC GETS A NEW LOOK LexisNexis Academic is a database containing full-text materials from news sources (including the Chronicle of Higher Education), legal information, business resources, broadcast transcripts from television and radio networks, political transcripts from hearings, press briefings and presidential news conferences, wire services, public opinion polls, etc. There is also more country information, and they've even added coverage of some blogs. Although the new look includes new features for enhanced searching, it may take a while to get used to. In either Easy Search or Power Search, selecting sources is somewhat easier. Power Search allows you to use Boolean operators and various other search techniques. One nice addition is a set of tutorials to help with searching: Overview; Selecting Sources; Working with Results; Summaries and Headnotes. Find them to the right after logging in to Lexis Nexis Academic from the library's Databases page. Because Lexis Nexis Academic is available through library subscription, IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ------------------------------------------------ ==> 2006 JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS NOW AVAILABLE Journal Citation Reports (JCR)allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. JCRŽ Web helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationships between citing and cited journals. You may find: * the most frequently cited journals in a field * the highest impact journals in a field * the largest journals in a field "With the new 2006 data, you will continue to access the most current, objective information available as you determine a publication's impact and influence in the global research community." Earlier JCRs are available on CD-ROM in the library's reference room. Access JCRŽ Web from the library's Databases page by title. Because it is available through library subscription, offcampus access is restricted -- you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. >From the ISI Web of Knowledge page, click on the link to Journal Citation Reports under Analytical Tools. ------------------------------------ Next Issue: September 18, 2007 ------------------------------------ Find the Libnews-L archives at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/libinfo/publications/libnews
