LIBNEWS-L: New Resources and Services at Old Dominion University Libraries February 26, 2008 * New Titles/Editions Added to the Gale Virtual Reference Library * African-American Resources Highlighted * Black History Month Exhibit Available Through February ------------------------------------------------------------------- ==> NEW TITLES/EDITIONS ADDED TO THE GALE VIRTUAL REFERENCE LIBRARY Through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), we have online access to numerous encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research. Several new titles/editions were recently added to the Gale Virtual Reference Library: * Encyclopedia of Small Business (3rd edition) * Gale Encyclopedia of Nursing and Allied Health (2nd edition) * Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (3rd edition) * Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer: A Guide to Cancer and Its Treatments (2nd edition) * Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine (2nd edition) * Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders (2nd edition) One feature is the ability to search the entire database of encyclopedias. One downfall is that for some titles, there may be a more recent edition in print format. Access these and other Gale virtual reference sources from the library's catalog by title or from the "Databases" page under "Gale Virtual Reference Library." Because they are available through VIVA, IP address restrictions apply: from off campus, you'll need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page. ------------------------------------------- ==> AFRICAN-AMERICAN RESOURCES HIGHLIGHTED The library would like to highlight several resources relating to African-American History: * Encyclopedia of African-American Culture and History * Investigation of the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. * Selected Journals Relating to Black History Month * Historical Statistics of the United States Millennial Edition Online * Early American Newspapers Read more about them and how to access them from the Library's Resource Highlights page: http://www.lib.odu.edu/resources/highlights/ Also consider subscribing to one of the library's RSS feeds -- information at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/help/faq-rss.htm ----------------------------------------------------------- ==> BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBIT AVAILABLE THROUGH FEBRUARY In recognition of Black History Month, the Old Dominion University Libraries is featuring an exhibit, "Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism." The exhibit will be available through the month of February in the main lobby of Perry Library. A Web page is also available at http://www.lib.odu.edu/exhibits/blackhistorymonth/2008. The exhibit includes photos and textual materials highlighting the contributions of Carter G. Woodson to "educate Americans about cultural diversity and democracy.... For the sake of African Americans and all Americans, Woodson heralded the contributions of African Americans and the black tradition. In 1915, he established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and by the time of his death in 1950, he had laid the foundation for a rethinking of American identity. The multiculturalism of our times is built on the intellectual and institutional labors of Woodson and the association he established. He should be known not simply as the Father of Black History, but as pioneer of multiculturalism as well." --From the Association for the Study of African American Life and History The exhibit was researched and created by Nakheia McFarland and Edison Simmons.
