"The Thief at the End of the World: Rubber, Power, and the Seeds of Empire" is the gripping tale of how a nineteenth century would-be explorer, Henry Wickham, absconded -- literally -- with the seeds of Brazil’s most valuable natural product.  Jackson writes, "Henry’s theft was no different than that by scores of others before him – and yet, in a fundamental way, it was.... Thirty-four years after Henry’s theft, the British rubber grown in the Far East from Henry’s seeds would flood the world market, collapsing the Amazon economy." A speaker with a wry sense of humor, Joe Jackson sits on the Board of the Friends of the Old Dominion University Libraries.  He holds an MFA from the University of Arkansas and for twelve years was an investigative reporter for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.  He is a resident of Virginia Beach, living with his wife, son, and a clumsy dog. The event is free and open to the public and will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in Perry Library Room 151. Free parking will be available in Parking Garage B after 6:30 p.m. Mr. Jackson's book will be available for sale courtesy of the University Village Bookstore.
