Limited services January 5-18

Construction and renovation of the first floor is being completed in early January. Because of the major moves of collections, furniture, and equipment from other floors that will occur, the continuing construction, and liability issues, the library will offer only limited service from January 5 through 18.

During these two weeks, public access to floors 2, 3 and 4 will not be possible. Patrons will be limited to the 1st floor services available from the Circulation Services Desk. These services include book returns, payment of fines and fees, registration, interlibrary loan requests and pickups, reserve material access, limited Internet access, and paging of needed materials from library shelves (within 24 hours).

During this period, the Reference & Research Department will be moving back to the first floor, as will Interlibrary Loan Services, the Photocopy Center, and the government publications collection. Renovation of the upper floors will continue during and after these moves.

Assistance is available from the Information Desk and the Circulation Services Desk. Telephone 757-683-4154 for further details or check for special messages and updates on the library homepage at http://www.lib.odu.edu.

Center for Research Libraries

Old Dominion University has been a member of the Center for Research Libraries since 1994. Founded in 1949, the Center functions as a membership-based non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide the scholarly community access to materials rarely found in most North American libraries.

Its collections total over 3.6 million volumes and 1.1 million microforms. The Center has an especially strong collection of foreign materials, including newspapers, journals, dissertations, and government documents.

Get more information on the Center from its website: http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/ . You can search the CRL catalog from that website or from our own library homepage (select Library catalogs from the Internet Resources menu).

You may request materials for an indefinite loan period by calling Wayne Burton, Interlibrary Loan Services Librarian, at 757-683-4170, or by e-mailing him at wburton@odu.edu.

World-Wide Web student workshops

Old Dominion students are invited to register for one of the workshops called Searching the World-Wide Web, to be held in the Information Technologies Instruction Center, room 163 in the University Library. The sessions focus on learning to search the Web for resources, using Netscape.

The half-hour workshops will be held at 12:45pm on Thursdays, January 22 and 29. Additional workshops will be given at 1:00pm on Saturday, January 24 and at 6:00pm on Wednesday, January 21.

Students must register on the day of the workshop they wish to attend by calling 683-4178 or by signing up in person at the Reference Desk.

Need an introduction to the library?

New students, faculty and staff are invited to attend one of two introductions to the library to be held on Tuesdays, January 20 and 27 from 12:45 to 1:15pm. These sessions are intended for interested individuals (not whole classes) and will focus on using the online catalog and other important resources. A tour of the building will not be a part of the session, however.

No registration is necessary; just meet the librarian in the lobby next to the poster advertising this event.
