in January. In the "surf" sessions, you'll learn some of the best
techniques for searching the library catalog, journal article databases
and the Web. These are held on Tuesdays at 12:30 in the lobby of
Perry Library, on January 18 and 25. The "turf" sessions are tours
of the major sections of Perry Library, with advice on using them
effectively. They begin in the lobby at 12:30 on Thursdays, January
20 and 27. Registration is not necessary; just meet in the lobby
by the poster. For more information, call 683-4178.
StarQuest teaches basic skills
StarQuest:
Success Tips for Academic Research is a new interactive online tutorial
that is available for anyone to use. It teaches basic library and
information skills, such as finding periodical articles and searching
the Web effectively. Additionally, the tutorial includes a glossary
and sections on plagiarism and evaluation of sources. The sections
are designed to be viewed sequentially but may also be used separately
to meet specific research needs.StarQuest can be used independently
or in conjunction with a course. A multiple-choice quiz at the end
of each section helps to reinforce learning, and a "final exam" is available as well. The latter should prove useful to faculty
who would like to include StarQuest as a required course assignment.
To get to the tutorial, begin at the library's homepage, http://www.lib.odu.edu,
and click on Research Assistance, then on StarQuest. Note that other
tutorials and aids are available here also. To go directly to StarQuest,
enter http://www.lib.odu.edu/research/tutorials/starquest. If you
have questions or suggestions, please contact the authors at cswaine@odu.edu
and ehogue@odu.edu. |
