Welcome to campus

If you are new to campus, we hope to see you in Webb Center on orientation day for new faculty. Also, we look forward to seeing many of you at some of our faculty events in August. Be sure to read about them in this issue of Library Update.

Don't miss out on these events

Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to attend these beginning-of-semester events: § Tour of Perry Library, August 23, 10:30am - Become acquainted with some of the most important areas for faculty to know about. Meet in the lobby. § Orientation to the Digital Services Center, August 23, 11:00am - See the equipment and learn about services available to faculty. Meet in the Center, 3rd floor, Perry Library.

Surf 'n' Turf: everyone's invited

Faculty, students, staff: the university community is invited to learn more about the library over the lunch hour. Our "Surf" sessions will teach you some of the best techniques for searching electronic databases, the library catalog, and the Web. These sessions are held every Tuesday in September at 12:30 and begin in the lobby of Perry Library. "Turf" sessions are tours of Perry Library and help you get the lay of the land. You will discover some of the most important areas of the library and how to use them effectively. These tours are given every Thursday in September, beginning at 12:30 in the lobby. Surf 'n' Turf sessions are informal and designed for interested individuals, not whole classes. Registration is not necessary.

Workshop for students on computing essentials

Student Computing Essentials: Finding Your Way on the Internet is the title of workshop to be held on September 14 from 12:30 until 1:15pm in room 163 of the Perry Library. Learn new ways to explore the Web and learn how to: § Locate images, audio, and movie clips § Be search engine savvy § Understand differences between searching the Web and Web-based databases the library pays for § Determine what's good and what's not For more information, call 683-4131.

Distance Learning Corner

In this new column, we plan to tell you about new services, hints on electronic access to resources, and anything else that is important for distance learners and faculty to know--whether they are in the Bahamas, on ships at sea, at one of the higher education centers, or just across campus. This month, we want to remind you about the StarQuest online tutorial available from the library's homepage, http: www.lib.odu.edu, by clicking on Research Assistance. Here you can choose to brush up on particular library skills or learn new ones. You can also choose to learn about the Internet and discover tips for searching the Web.

Easier access to electronic resources

From your home or office, you can get access to hundreds of databases and thousands of electronic journals through the library's home page on the Web. If you connect through the Information Resources link, you won't even need to configure your browser in any special way. If, instead, you are in the library catalog and wish to link to an electronic resource from there, you will be successful only if you have configured your browser. This is much easier than it sounds. From the library's home page, click on off-campus users to get instructions.

Try this one!

Go to http://www.broadcast.com for a gateway to online audio and video sources, live broadcasting from nearly 400 radio stations and 30 television stations or networks. You can also get access to live events and audio books from this site. With a few clicks, you can be watching the Hispanic Television Network or a Spacelink program from NASA.

Changes in photocopy and printing services

The Photocopy Center on the 2nd floor of Perry Library is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 6:00pm. for drop-off service. Self-service copiers are available on every floor during all hours the library is open. Color printing is being discontinued from the Reference and Research computers on 1st floor, but black and white printing is still available. All photocopies and prints are now priced at fifteen cents per page. This reflects rising operational charges and is the first price increase in almost a decade.
