Faculty publications exhibit coming

During the upcoming semester break might be a good time to begin preparing for the 2002 Faculty Scholarly Research and Publications Exhibit, which will be held in April. Intended to honor achievement in research and scholarly endeavors, the display will be housed in Perry Library.

All faculty are encouraged to submit scholarly work that has been completed during the past two years, January 2000 through December 2001, to Amy Farinelli in Room 112 of the Library.

For more information, call her at 683-4186 or e-mail her at afarinel@odu.edu.

The deadline for submission is Friday, March 1, 2002 at 5:00 p.m.

Electronic reserve is the way to go

Beginning with the Spring 2002 semester, the Perry Library Electronic Reserves Program (E-reserves) will expand to include all journal articles used in the teaching of classes. The pilot program has been well received by students and faculty who have appreciated having access to reserve material 24 hours a day, being able to click on the Internet links in the journal articles, and the immediacy of delivery to distance learning students.

With the expansion of the E-reserve program, the library will no longer circulate photocopies of articles placed on reserve at the Circulation Services desk.

The Reserve Services staff will exercise quality control measures to insure the accuracy and legibility of all items scanned for E-reserves.

Access to all E-reserve material is restricted to currently registered Old Dominion University students and is password protected. The campus ID number, entered without spaces or hyphens, serves as the user name, and the word viva in lower case letters is the password.

For more information on E-reserves or reserves in general, contact Marie Howard at mmhoward@odu.edu or 683-4154.

Surf 'n' Turf

Learn more about library resources and services. Our "Surf" sessions will teach you some of the best techniques for searching electronic databases, the library catalog, and the Web. These sessions are set for Tuesdays, January 22 and 29, at 12:30; they begin in the lobby of Perry Library.

"Turf" sessions are tours of Perry Library and help you get the lay of the land. You will discover some of the most important areas of the Library and how to use them effectively. These tours will be held on Thursdays, January 24 and 31, beginning at 12:30 in the lobby.

Surf 'n' Turf sessions are informal and designed for interested individuals--faculty, staff and students--not whole classes. Registration is not necessary.

New database-to-journal
article links

Among the periodical index databases that offer at least some full-text articles themselves are

  • ABI/Inform (business periodicals)
  • Dow-Jones Interactive (newspapers and magazines)
  • Contemporary Women's Issues
  • InfoTrac (Expanded Academic, health, business, etc.)

However, such databases are increasingly being linked to full-text articles in other sources. For example,

  • America: History & Life links to JSTOR
  • CINAHL links to Journals@Ovid Full Text
  • Historical Abstracts links to JSTOR
  • Periodical Contents Index links to JSTOR
  • PsycINFO links to Journals@Ovid Full Text

Not all articles in the databases are available in full-text format, but you can either limit your search to those that are, or you can click on article links. Although this may sound confusing, you don't need to remember what links to what, since the links are "seamless."

Enhanced WorldCat is for you!

Find this database from the library Web page by clicking on Information Resources; then click on WorldCat in the blue box. With over 30 million listings of library materials worldwide, this resource is updated daily and lets you search by title, author or keyword. Once you see an item you want, you can click on Libraries to discover which ones own it. If Old Dominion is not listed, you can click on ILL (Inter Library Loan) to request to borrow it. Look for many new features.

Maps! You can find thousands of them through the library's Web pages. From USGS topographical maps to 18th century cartographic maps, from current maps for almost any city in the world to driving directions across town, from U.S. Census data maps to maps of New York relating to the attacks of September 11--discover these resources at http://www.lib.odu.edu. Just click on Information Resources, then on General Reference. You may even discover maps you didn't realize you needed.
