Tour of Perry Library,
10:30AM - Become acquainted with some of the most important
areas for faculty to know about. Meet in the lobby.

Orientation to the
Digital Services Center, 11:00AM - See how your classes might
benefit from working on digital projects and learn about some
of the library's special digital projects. Meet in the Center,
3rd floor, Perry Library.
Also, if you are a new
faculty member, we hope to meet you in Webb Center on new faculty
orientation day, August 23.
Surf 'n' Turf for dessert
Grab a quick bite; then
head to Perry Library for some unusual dessert.
"Surf" sessions will teach you some of the best techniques
for searching electronic databases, the library catalog, and the
Web. These sessions are held every Tuesday in September at 12:30
and begin in the lobby of Perry Library.
"Turf" sessions
are tours of Perry Library and help you get the lay of the land.
You will discover some of the most important areas of the Library
and how to use them effectively. These tours are given every Thursday
in September, beginning at 12:30 in the lobby.
Surf 'n' Turf sessions
are informal and designed for
interested individuals, not whole classes. Registration is not necessary.
Welcome two new librarians
Donna Hughes-Oldenburg
joined the library this spring as Head of Bibliographic Services,
which includes acquisitions, serials and cataloging. She came to
us from Southeastern Louisiana University, where she had most recently
held the position of Collection Development Librarian. She received
her MLIS from the University of California, an MA and a BA from
Hollins College, and has done additional graduate study at the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Wayne Burton, formerly
the Interlibrary Loan Librarian and Interim Head of Access Services,
has accepted the position of Head of Access Services, which includes
circulation, microforms, interlibrary loan, art and music services.
He earned his MSLS from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville
and an MA in Humanities for Old Dominion University.

Returning women: mark
your calendars for September 12
Concerned about library
research skills in the Electronic Age? Computer skills? Math and
writing skills? Come to the Virginia Beach Room in Webb Center from
12:30 to 1:30 when a panel of experts will share resources that
are sure to answer some of your questions about these academic skills.
Maglev exhibit on view
Perry Library is producing
both a Web exhibit and a lobby exhibit on the history of Maglev
(superconducting magnetically levitated vehicle), the high-speed
transport system debuting on campus this year.
The lobby exhibit, on
display during the month of September, will include a handout with
an abbreviated development timeline and a bibliography of resources.
The Web exhibit will remain available indefinitely at http://www.lib.odu.edu/maglev.
Distance Learning Corner
Are you teaching a distance
learning course? Taking one? We have library handbooks that address
all your questions. You will find them online by visiting the library
Web page at http://www.lib.odu.edu, clicking on Library Services,
then on Distance Learning. Be sure to check out the Faculty Supplement
to the basic handbook if you will be teaching a Teletechnet course
or teaching at one of the higher education centers.
University Librarian
retires
On September 1, after
ten years of service as University Librarian, Dr. Jean A. Major
will retire. Accomplishments during her tenure include inauguration
of the Friends of the Library, a large addition to and renovation
of the Perry Library, and development of the Diehn Composers Room.
Virginia S. O'Herron will serve as Acting University Librarian.
