Scholarly alert services: keeping up in your areas of interest

When new research articles are published in your specific areas of interest, you want to know right away. Learn from Science & Technology Reference Librarian Renee Davis and an expert from ScienceDirect how to use free electronic alert services to your own best advantage.

Old Dominion University faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to attend this informative workshop on Thursday, October 24, at 12:30 PM during activity hour in Room 163 of Perry Library. For more information, contact Renee Davis at rdavis@odu.edu or 683-4484.

Grad student research workshops

"Using Research Tools in Education and Related Areas" is the topic for the first of two research workshops geared towards doctoral and other graduate students' needs this semester. This workshop will be held on Saturday morning, October 19, from 9:30 until 11:30 in Room 163 of Perry Library. A second workshop, set for Saturday, October 26, will focus on electronic journals in the humanities.

Contact reference librarian Nancy Schafer at 683-5909 or at nschafer@odu.edu for more information or to register for either or both workshops.

Celebrating the 25th Literary Festival

"The Creative Moment, Arts Reunion II" is the theme for the 25th annual Old Dominion University Literary Festival, being held September 30 through October 5 and featuring such notables as Susan Sontag, Stephen Dunn, and W. D. Snodgrass. A related exhibit will be on display in the lobby of Perry Library throughout the week. The Web site at http://courses.lib.odu.edu/litfest/25th provides the schedule, together with biographies of the forty-some participants.

Try this!

The Electronic Text Center at the University of Virginia provides Apache texts, Tang poems, works by Voltaire, Shakespeare, Austen, Cather, Dante and scores of other authors in a variety of languages. As a member of VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia, Old Dominion University Libraries allow faculty, staff and students to have access to many of these resources.

The URL is http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/uvaonline.html . If you wish to access the site from off campus, go through the Old Dominion University Libraries site rather than directly to the URL so that you will be recognized as a legitimate user of this resource. Near the bottom of the library Web page, click on VIVA from the Quick Links menu. Then select Collections, then Books and other electronic texts, then Electronic text library.

Research assistance Web page

Earlier this year Netscape gave a "Cool Site" award to this page, citing its usefulness and comprehensiveness. At http://www.lib.odu.edu/research/ you'll find group instruction opportunities, tutorials, course guides, and a number of "how to" guides. Faculty will find a form for requesting library instruction for courses. Check it out!

Book sale October 30 - November 2

Distance Learning Corner

WorldCat could easily become your best friend when you are searching for books, not to mention recordings, serial publications and more. You can search this electronic catalog by author, title, keyword, or a combination of these.

Not only will those resources owned by the Old Dominion University Libraries be identified as such, but also you can easily see which other libraries own them by clicking on the libraries icon. You may also click on the ILL icon to request the item via interlibrary loan. If you do so, be sure to mention your site in the "Comments" box. Find the WorldCat link under Information Resources on the library's Web page at http://www.lib.odu.edu .

Online book ordering

Do you serve as the faculty library representative for your department? You are encouraged to turn in orders for books using the library's electronic form, available from the forms menu at http://www.lib.odu.edu/services.

Friends of the Library

Offering a variety of interesting volunteer opportunities and sponsoring an annual author dinner are just two of the ways the Friends of the Library group helps to support the mission of the Old Dominion University Libraries. To learn more about membership, visit the Web site at http://www.lib.odu.edu/aboutlib/friends or contact Fern McDougal at fmcdouga@odu.edu or at 683-4141.
